1 edit | Well, duh! Folks, it doesn't take rocket science (well maybe for the RIAA but not the rest of us) to see the very obvious: that a big reason for loss of music sales is that the music just plain sucks. That and the economy.
I wonder how many millions of dollars they wasted on such a study. -- "Kayura or Badamon, whichever you are, you should know that I will never give up this battle. By the will of the Ancient, I shall succeed!" - Shuten (Anubis) from the Ronin Warriors.

| Eh The majority of the crap the record companies push is "Hip Hop" bullshit crap. Rap died in the mid 90's...why would anyone want to hear about how many cars or boats some dumb bastard has...it's pathetic.
The state of rock music is no better...post-mod jackasses trying to sound more "retro" than the last guy....
Sad state of affairs. | |

| It's not all crap I bought plenty of really good metal CDs that came out this year:
Ayreon: The Human Equation Evergrey: The Inner Circle Iced Earth: The Glorious Burden Megadeth: The System Has Failed Nightwish: Once Therion: Lemuria Therion: Sirius B Threshold: Subsurface Velvet Revolver: Contraband
...and more that I can't think of at the moment...
A couple of these I consider to be among the best albums in my collection (of over 500 albums).
I think I've purchased about 40 CDs so far this year. Most are a few years old (bands that I'm just now discovering).
I've got dozens and dozens of good albums that came out in the last 3 or 4 years alone. So whomever said that no good music has been made in the past 10 years is speaking of his own personal opinion. I doubt he's really looked to see what's out there.
The point is, not everything is crap to all people. Don't let the media or the pop radio try to tell you to like whatever kind of crap music they are pushing. Go out and discover a genre of music that you agree with. Chances are that there has been new releases out there that you just might really like.
A lot of people seem to be downloading music that they claim to be crap. If it's crap, why waste your time with it at all? -- I am of the stars. I am called "Forever". Eternity courses through my veins.

| In other words music today is just like music from the past. You have good songs and good artists along with the bad. For those of you complaining about crappy music if you don't like what you hear on the radio then look elsewhere for good music. There is plenty of great artists out there. | |

| It's all crap! Or is it? I just want to remind everyone that just because YOU think it's crap, doesn't mean it is. Sure there are several artists we could name that we think are crap but that doesn't mean there isn't someone out there who genuinely enjoys that artists "music". To say that all music is crap is very generic. As an example, for every person who doesn't like Britney Spears, there are 4 that do. It's the same with any artist. You can't blindly claim music sucks just because YOU don't like it. There's a reason why some of these artists sell what they sell and get away with selling. Why on earth would Britney still be around if she was "crap"? I mean, there is no reason I can personally think of for her to be where she is today. The same can be said for MANY artists. They're not just there because the music industry pushes them. If an artist sells 10 CD's, why would you bother to keep them around? If an artist sells 8,000,000 there is no logical reason to throw them out. What...because you personally think their music is crap they should just off the artist? LOL. Let's be realistic here. These artists are around because SOMEBODY is going out there and buying tickets to their concerts. SOMEBODY is out there buying their CD's. SOMEBODY out there is sitting at home downloading this "crappy" music.
Just thought I'd put things into perspective. Artists don't exist because they're "good". They exist because we LET them exist. -- Never expect anything and never underestimate the unexpected.

| Re: It's all crap! Or is it? Perhaps because most people can't be bothered about music and just suck up what comes out? I know people who mostly just listen to radio music (not everybody buys cds you know), and they're complaining about the crap out there too. Sure, some don't, and a lot couldn't be bothered either.
I'd say popular mtv music is kinda like how fast food is to food. It's not great by any stretch of the imagination, but it's marketed aggressively as hell, and for most of the public who don't care about music (as a hobby), you know, people who just listen to the radio if anything, it's just there. I doubt if you can get many people who say "omg! Kentucky Fried Chicken kicks ass!" but look at any KFC outlet and sure enough it's packed most of the time.
I know parents who buy a bunch of cds for their kids as gifts, they have no idea what they're buying, they just walk in the store and see the "new releases" section. I also know a lot of kids just buy the latest thing because all of their friends bought it. Not every kid is savvy enough / has the means / opportunity / inclination to download.
You're hearing all this bitching here from people who (presumeably) actually like listening to music, and have favorite bands/songs and stuff, as opposed to people who don't care. -- Nakata Itami, Vice-President of the Tokyo-3 Middle Daughters Club

| Re: It's all crap! Or is it? Well, unfortunately I can't agree 100%. I agree that music now a days is very close to your fast food analogy but the fact remains, what music is to one person, isn't the same for the next. There are people who actually believe random noises thrown together is "music". Who are we to say it's not? Because we don't like it? That's a ridiculous notion. And that's what's pretty much going on here. None of us have the right to say that music is crap for EVERYONE. It's music, which is different to every single person. That is why there are so many genres. That is why there are so many artists. That's all I'm trying to say. You can't say that because YOU think it's crap, that is indeed crap. How does that saying go...

Back on topic. . . It's too bad the RIAA will just ignore this study. They seem to think they're on a role with the lawsuits. Watch your torrents folks!

| Maybe we are at a musical watershed? Hate to admit this but I lived through a similar dry period back in the late 50s and early 60s...the only musician it seemed, that had any integrity and showed innovation was James Brown and Chuck Berry. All the other stuff was novelty crap like the Chipmunks and Burl Ives or Dean Martin. Even Elvis was churning out commercial pablum.
The Beach Boys and the Four Seasons were producing listenable stuff but Chuck Berry was creating modern Rock 'n' Roll and James Brown was creating Soul. There was also a huge Folk market led by Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary. (See the movie A Mighty Wind...all true)
The paradigm shift happened when Dylan invented Rap music on Subterranean Homesick Blues and went electric. Then the Beatles showed up and everything changed. I mean everything...suddenly we started hearing "American" blues music (forbidden to main stream radio) played back to us by the Brits like Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Who and so on...Elvis went to Vegas and got fat but Chuck Berry kept Reelin' and a Rockin'....
Dylan and the Beatles changed everything and set the stage for Jimi Hendrix, Rod Stewart, Peter Frampton, CSNY and so on...now the closest we have to rock and roll is coming out of the "Country and Western" genre.
A few years ago Jame Brown played at the dedication to the Rock and Roll museum in Cleveland. He asked the crowd for a moment of silence to remember those who had died before. he specifically mentioned John Lennon, Mama Cass (Elliot) and Mickey Mantle (Mickey Mantel???)....he bowed his head and the crowd settled down. The silence was broken by some fool in the back row who yelled "All Right! Moment of Silence! Yes!"...that guy is my hero!;)
