Not only that, but you are streaming data over the internet. I am not understanding this. Do they tax services that fax documents over the inernet for a fee to standard phone lines?
This is just a money grab by states, and the way they are acting shows so. This is the exact reason why states do NOT desreve more power in the US.
Next thing you know they will be using right of way ordinances to bull doze houses to make way for a hotel and shopping mall.:(
Real Estate taxes, cell phone taxes, state taxes are crazy. People argue about presidents, but they dont seem to notice the 7 bucks a month tacked onto their cell phone bill or 500 bucks a month tacked onto their mortage.
All this translates to 100s of billions of lost income that they never had in the first place.:( -- I tie a rope around my penis and jump from a tree, don't you wanna grow up to be just like me!!!! |

It is NOT about our president or Federal government, the STATES are the ones raping their citizens. Property tax for homes in CT is incredible. You will be paying 3K a year in taxes alone for closet space.:( -- I tie a rope around my penis and jump from a tree, don't you wanna grow up to be just like me!!!! |

Can they tax them with out a physical presence? Taxation with out Representation. Well they do that to DC already. If they allow them to tax VoIP what is to stop them from taxing internet sales. |

If I remember correctly, in California, it is required by law here to tax any e-commerce we make here. Some sites still don't charge, (that might be a mistake) but that does save us a bit of change off the outrageous state-wide 8.25% sales tax. |

1 edit | I think I have the other side of the coin.....
Seeing as how State aid to local towns have dramatically decreased. What will happen when the revenue from the phone companies are further dwindled?
The State will have to find other ways to make up the difference. How will they do that? More taxes and fee increases (eg: Increased MV fees), and the towns will have to have increases also (more property taxes).
While I'm in no way endorsing a tax for Voip, but as I see it, one way or the other, were going to get screwed:(. |

| The Internet is killing the tax base
This is one more set two loss of service taxes.
Please note that this is a serious blow to the function of many government units there are three alternatives:
Shrink government. This normally equates to shrinking services to citizens, not a real shrinking of government.
Add to income taxes
Add to property taxes
Choose your poison. The governments are only going to make up loss revenue that has the least impact on those that vote them into office..... |

A $445 Billion Federal deficit and growing ... what's a poor State or City to do to pay for just the basic services you demand? ... Looks like we are going to get just what we voted for; more taxes at the State and local level. A by product of voting for "moral issues" instead of "real" issues. Just "Buck-Up" and stop your complaining! |

It doesn't even have to be a store or call center, it can be one guy on a telephone based in the state, working from home no less. But now I'm wondering, are services subject to that same type of rule? Or is it just for trade in merchandise? -- Time is an abstract concept invented by carbon based life forms to monitor their constant decay.-Thunderclese |

| There used to be...
There used to be something called "revenue sharing" by which the federal government shared back with the states and local governments a fair chunk of the federal taxes. But then came the Reagan era and mindless "tax cuts". Federal tax cuts, that is, which of course resulted in the cutting off of revenue sharing. So the net effect has been a dramatic rise of state and local taxes since the state and local governments have had to make up for at least some of the lost revenue. There have always been expensive federal mandates imposed on states and local governments, like some safety and health standards, but their cost used to be offset by federal funding that has often vanished to hide the Reagan years deficits. Then there are the new unfunded "feel good" federal mandates like new homeland security rules or No Child Left Behind, which is forcing local governments to spend to "improve" education but provides no funding the expensive testing and "train to the test" programs it requires. There is no free lunch for those who work hard for their money. The free lunch is only for those whose money works for them. |
