We have a company called Everest that offers phone, cable, and internet connectivity. They laid fiber throughout the city for their network. Everyday you would hear stories of them doing the same thing. Seems in our area alot of the older lines were not marked very well or were way off from their spots on the maps.
I for one would not want to be guessing about the location of that gas line..... |

I guess it's subcontractors but Verizon is owner of the line and may have to pay for damages. -- Jesus saves, but only Buddha makes incremental backups. |

your a retard, the funds are from investors in verizon, not from the goverments or any other places. When they break a pipe they will have to pay for it, that in turn means a higher bill for the customers to offset the cost of replaceing the pipes. I don't use verizon but I can tell you this I would rather they do it right the first time than have to pay more money to do it over again. If this had been a muni tax payer scam like some people wanted I am sure they would have continued to dig away breaking every pipe they can so they could milk more cash from the tax payers. You should give 2 secs of thought before you post such nonsense.
Why are people complaning about getting fiber already? What is wrong with you guys? SBC says 26 mbps for 18 million people in a few years and nothing but complaints about the slow 26mbps speeds. I suggest you filter your water and lay off the pills. |

The problem in locating utilities is non-metallic pipe. Utility locator's are great at finding metal pipe, but vitrified clay soil pipe and plastic water and gas piping are very hard to find. There are ways to find non-metallic pipe be they are very time consuming and some like the rattler can damage fragile pipe. Not all pipes have ports to send wires down to trace a pipe. It takes a very quiet day for a "listener" to work - certainly will not work on a busy street.
The above information comes from work related conversations with a site utility locator's service person. I am not a utility locator service person. |

They will be digging again before we know it. At least they better be, they messed up some peoples yards already (and they are close to my house) They met on Saturday to get everything straight.
If they did it without breaking something that would be a miracle. |

This happens a lot in Florida. With all the construction in my area from the hurricanes, it's happening daily.
The problem isn't Verizon, it's Florida's problem. As usual, they are absolutely inept at anything that requires more than a high school diploma to perform.
They come by once a year and mark the water lines on my street. And every year, they are in different places. Either they are totally incompetant, or someone keeps mysteriously digging up our watermain and moving it in the middle of the night.
Plus, good luck finding an up to date map on important things like this. We had our fiber trunk that goes to our office across the street cut. The contractor had the most up to date maps supplied by the county. Our fiber wasn't on that map. It's been there for 6 years... -- Abit VP-6 twin 800EB's @ 1002 Mhz.Proud member of the XDC. |

| Running fiber through gas lines.
I recall reading articles that claimed it would be possible to run the fiber lines inside existing gas lines, eliminating much of the expense of running a separate line.
Did Verizon think it would be a bad idea to do that? Probably a maintenance nightmare... |

Verizon probably doesn't want to do that because they'd have to pay some sort of leasing rights to the gas company as well as the cities/counties. -- Power corrupts. Absolute power is kinda neat. |

I work in the Telecom industry in Tampa, and have been greatly impacted by Verizon contractors apparent disregard for underground utilities. Getting underground permits are very difficult these days with timeframes for approval sometimes averaging 60-90 days!! A permitting agent for the county told me Verizon averages one utility strike every 400'!!! So they put every other company through the ringer to get a permit, when Verizon does most of the damage. Must be nice to be the local LEC and get special treatment.... |
