It's amazing how the fiber is causing all this problem when the copper seems to have been laid with very little fanfare.
Looks like it's time for Verizon to find a new fiber installation contractor. |

Venison hiring to do this work. Must be lowest bid incompetents. I have seen this before, rather then get the best to do the job, they hire the cheapest and now they are going to pay, and pay, and pay. You're probably right. They couldn't outsource that work to India or China, so they hired the cheapest untrained chimps they could find to lay the fiber for them.

Its not as easy to miss lines as you guys think. I am an engineer at a mainly surveying company. I guess it depends how they went about digging up the street, etc. The survey company might have been off, or maybe whatever plans they were using could have been off, or like was noted, the company digging probably are a bunch of morons. But there could have been other factors in this besides the people digging. Not sure how tight of control the surveys are in Florida. |

very true, and since the water table in florida is so high many of the burried lines and pipes are only but a foot or so under. However the blue prints should have told you were the lines/pipes were exactly. After the first few accidents you would have thought that they would have used more caution. Unfortunately it wasnt the case. |

| reply to travanx He said in the past few months, crews have trenched about 5.5 million feet of earth in Hillsborough County and laid about 4.5 million feet of fiber-optic cable.
Verizon also is looking at other means, including using ground-penetrating radar and other technology, to locate lines before crews dig.
Neither Elek nor county officials knew how much the sewer line and water main break at Lakeview and Dale Mabry - and the resulting repairs - would cost. The tab for repairing the 188 other breaks that have occurred since August approached $103,000 last week.
When the lines are broken, county crews make the repairs, VanDyke said.
County auditors examine the cause of each break and determine whether Verizon or water department officials are to blame. The responsible party is billed, said Rich Cummings, section manager for line maintenance for the water department
Seems to me that Verizon has done a lot of work already, and is doing a fairly good job, And seems to me it is not 100% Verizons fault.
If a few broken pipes, and lines are the price to be paid for a Fiber connection, and a good future network for Tampa, then that is a small price to pay. -- Experience -- a great teacher, but the tutition fees... . BOFH |

That's because when all the copper was buried long ago, there were far fewer pipes, sewers, electrical cables and whatnot underground. Verizon is laying fiber optic cable in heavily populated areas with many obstacles beneath the ground that were not there previously. RIGHT ON THE MONEY! It's happening to Tampa and will happen to every other metro area covered by Verizon that is pending FIOS.
The city will blame them for the broken pipes but who is blaming the city for the outdated plans? |
