Re: Wonder

one thing going for CA though is it has billions upon billions of dollars in reserve compared to "Kazaa" which is run out of some third world country that only a geographer can find on an atlas, with about as much funding as a kid at a lemonade stand.

Yes and no. If I read the Wired article correctly, their main offices are in Sydney, Australia, but they are incorporated in Vanuatu.

re

said by cnet article:
The company said that any other peer-to-peer file exchange programs, such as Blubster, Gnucleus and WinMX, could also degrade network performance and consume storage space because they are bundled with adware or spyware.

WinMX has never been bundled with spyware or adware... I don't know where they're getting their info from, but this is completely false...

spyware free?

What is up with Kazaa's website saying that it is spyware free, "Sharman's No Spyware Commitment"?

Re: spyware free?

I went to install Kazaa once. I actually sat down and read that long thing to see what else it was installing and when I read all spyware it was going to add I canceled the install, but it was to late. Once you run the installation program it immediately starts putting spyware on before you agree to anything.

The article doesn't say it's spyware - it's adware. No one who's ever used the POS would claim any different...

True the adware (Kazaa) is a free program installing third party spywares which can do all the enumerate things from Kazaa website.

So basically, their "No spyware commitment" is legally true: Kazaa is not a spyware.

I use it to play call of duty... the downside... it forces me to look at 2 different adverts for about 20 seconds each.

Your talking semantics. Adware is the same as spyware in my book. If they are tracking me or if they try to install stuff with out my permission they are SPYWARE or better yet let's call them what they really are. Scumware.

Re: spyware free?

There is a huge difference between adware and spyware.

Using the classical definitions and not the new made up ones the anti-advertising, privacy nazis have come up with
adware: software that tracks you or sends ad's to your PC in with the users knowing consent in exchange for use of the software
Spyware: software that is almost the same as adware with the exception being that it does not inform the user as to what it is doing.

I can't see how anyone would equate the two unless they are in reality angry that the makers of the adware aren't offering it for free no strings attached.

Re: spyware free?

So basically you support adware/spyware and don't see it as a problem. Imagine opening your mailbox jam packed, even overflowing with ads. You would be calm right and just pick our what you need with a bright smile on your face and throw the rest away?

He's just described the differences between adware and spyware (not especially wordy perhaps, but imo largely correct), and yet you still lump them together Ignorance like this is what purveyors of spyware count on, slowing down efforts to curb them, and making it more difficult for legitimate advertisers to keep doing an honest job.

adware/spyware, its all the same thing. they spy on your surfing habits to know what ads you're most likely to buy from/click on.

Well, Do you know those store discount cards. That they swipe, so you can get 10% to 20% discount. And you have to give your name and address. And if you pay By Credit card. They track your spending habits as well.

So, Either offline or offline. There is information about you on your day to day spending.

No, it's not the same thing. Read Combat Chuck's definition for a decent way of telling them apart. If people make an informed decision to install programs on their systems that deliver ads to get free software, that's adware.

Spyware may consist of adware, but it doesn't get your consent. There are also other types of spyware that have nothing to do with ads (keystroke loggers, for example).

For somebody to have been a member here for over three years and not know the difference is frankly amazing.

Sharman's No Spyware Commitment

* Kazaa does NOT install or delete software from your computer without your permission.
* Kazaa does NOT contain software that gathers personally identifiable information about you.
* Kazaa and its partners securely process any credit card or transaction information you may give.
* Kazaa does NOT contain software that monitors keyboard strokes.
* Kazaa does NOT deceptively install software that centrally records your personally identifiable internet usage.
* Kazaa does NOT prevent your efforts to remove Kazaa.
They just don't define WHAT a spyware is.

The only thing i find wierd is in my mind Kazaa invented spyware. Now i know this isn't true, but i never even heard of spyware before Kazaa. I mean it was like all of a sudden i had no pop-ups and BOOM it hit me like a bomb. Anyone else feel this way?

In my opinion, they consider themselves spyware free because the believe the following:

•The extra applications that their programs come with are 'adware' not 'spyware'.
•'Adware' is not bad like 'spyware' is.
•That adware is an acceptable.

Damn, I agree with most as to why no one wants to see an "unrequested adv.", but come on, those who develop the software only have advertising as their benefactors...

How much free stuff do you think you can get away with? If you want the premium, then pay the premium.

Kazaa copyright infringement trial to begin Monday

It is difficult to root for one or the other party in this,
considering they both have deservedly gotten the reputations
to be slimeballs. But I sure hope Sharman loses this one:

I find sale papers in my mail box all the time and I didn`t ask USPS or anyone else to put them in there. Is it ADWARE? I think I`ll sue someone...ya, that will solve it. Can you not pay for kazaa and get a spyware/adware free version?
