That's Unconstitutional

Isn't that under the restraint of free trade, Verizon will never allow muni efforts to happen anywhere in its territory.

Thanks Fast Eddie!

Ok, so signing this bill to prevent the city from wasting more money on something it does not need starts to make up for the whole get-out-the-felon vote drive

Maybe now the city can stop pussy-footing around its real problems and get down to the business of fixing them.

I've seen your avatar. Having a change of heart about the telcos? You want them in charge now?

"the bill provides that Verizon will contribute at least $7 million a year and all ILECS will contribute 10% of any inflationary increase in their charges to a special Education Technology Fund (E-Fund)."

Same old BS as their E911 fees that went right into the executives pockets instead of what it was meant for...like saving kids drowning in boats. Or was it a different 'charge'?

Re: Thanks Fast Eddie!

There are two kinds of people who support these bans:

1. Are employed by the incumbents, and as such are motivated by their own financial security.

2. Hard-line fiscal conservatives who either own businesses or have some money in their pocket. They justify their greed with the trickle-down effect argument, a k a: give corporations everything they ever wanted, and some of it might just filter down to you, the little person.

Both are motivated by personal gain, and neither has a community's best interests in mind.

If the people of PA don't want their local jurisdiction, township, whatever, to not invest in a muni operation, then they should use traditional methods to stop it - just like has happened in the Illinois Tri-counties and other such places.

There's NO reason to make this a law, especially when it was proposed by the local ILEC!

I completely agree that the idea of free wireless is silly when Philly and like cities have so many other problems. But *I* have a real problem with such blatantly favorite, Big-Corp-sponsored legislation. Such a mix is never a good thing and it just shows how deep Corporate America has their hands in dictating policy.

Re: and verizon...

I would like to point-out to all those that seem to take great pleasure in bashing Bush as well as Republicans in general, that this Governor is a Democrat. By granting Verizon monopoly control in this matter proves that Democrats are just as bad as Republicans when it comes to big business.

It is amusing, telling, and contemptible that you think that personal gain and community interest are exclusive concepts.

The community is funded by the those that have gained the most.

Oh, so you know how to read everybody's mind? And you get to decide that there is "no such thing as principled opposition"?

3. Those who believe that the government should simply not compete with private industry. As hard as it is to unseat a private monopoly, a government monopoly is even harder.

You may very well not wish to adopt this as one of your governing principles, but that doesn't mean it's not a principled, honorable position that's looking out for the community as much as you are (and without any taint of being on the take from the telcos).

Our wonderful Governor is already in hot water over an intentional loop hole he left in a bill against Pittsburgh's proposed commuter tax (among other things). He's registered as a democrat but I would class him as a moderate.... his vote swaying to the winds of the highest bidder.
