Re: i want the att phone

You need a wireless video phone, then people will use it, maybe wireless-g to an access point.. if you stuck on a cord, or to a box in a room, furgedaboudit!!!!
That's so 1992, might as well have a minidisc player trying to poorly play mp3 files, too little too late, too last decade ago!!!

Bah!

Why on earth would I want to be able to also see the person I don't even want to be talking to in the first place?

Besides, I still don't trust VoIP. Maybe in a few years, but definitely not now, not yet.

Do they not understand limited bandwidth?

There's one inherent flaw with this idea.

The quality, although probably will be fine at first, will suck as the already limited bandwidth availability will be even more scarce.

But I guess I can see their marketing departments are good...
"Hey, let's sell this until it sucks, then when we have their money we'll just close shop and ride some new 'in' thing"

I guess I should have added...

The First one FAILED (196?)
The Second one FAILED (1992)
The Third one will FAIL (Today)

Hello, some say it costs too much... True.
Some say people don't want to see each other bright and early... True.

I'm assuming you don't have to have the video part turned on if you don't want to. Just turn it on for when you're talking to someone you want to look at and keep it off when you don't want to see who's trying to sell you newspaper subscriptions.

it's sorta already here...

you can do the same thing today using netmeeting, msn, yahoo, ect. all you need is a $18 webcam and a $3 mic and there is no subscription fee...true there are some people that don't have PC's but using VOIP with broadband I'm sure they have a PC.

Re: it's sorta already here...

True in a sense, but its still kind of like saying "What do I need a car for? A horse can get me there just the same." Last time I used YIM or MSN voicechat, the sound quality was terrible, and its usualy only half duplex.

If the sound quality was at least the same quality of a 900mhz cordless phone and the picture quality/framerate was at least as good as a decent webcam, I can see a reason to buy it.

I'm sure they'll put an option on the phone to toggle cam on and off, so if you dont want the person ot see you, you dont have to let them. At the very least you can cover the lens.

Since the porn industry has been one of the major pushes in quite a few technologies, I can see a company offering video phone sex, hehehe.

iChat A/V works incredibly well and when Tiger OS X.4 hits it will support multiple user conferences.

video phone sex will never work. if you can see the ugly girls on the other side, you'll most likely puke. either that or they'll have to start paying more for actually good looking girls.

True, but they do already have girls that go on cam and stuff, so a video phone wouldnt be much different.

yes mostly with the pc;i think it will be alot bigger in a few years with better upload,

for you people that don't want to see the person...dont turn on the video;but this is nice to have when you DO want to see them, like for me,i video message with family about once a week...that some of who i can only see about twice a year.[ofcourse waiting for upload to increase for it to be what it should].

voip without pc ,would be for people without broadband,i guess!

Apple's iChat really has those beat. Full screen video conferencing through iChat is amazing. Uses MPEG4 currently, switching to H.264(even higher quality at lower bitrate) next year when Tiger comes out.

I've been doing this for a couple years. Guess I was more ahead of my time than I thought. My daughter and I both have DSL so we have perfect picture and voice now and don't have to spend anything more.

Why?

why does anyone need this? they don't. Just another expensive thing that sounds cool. I have to admit it looks cool, but its pointless.

Re: Vonage VidOverIP

I don't trust Vonage with video over IP, my service is a joke and is only going to get worse. I've heard from a few insiders, that there's a new voip service launching with a qos assured network, offering video over IP. I'm going to hold off a bit, my contact says from beta, the quality is amazing!

Re: Vonage VidOverIP

I use vonage. The phone quality is excellent: better than a regular phone line. One suggestion: makes sure you have the voip modem right after the cable (or dsl) modem. You can get dropped calls if you place it inside your network like any other device.

I SO Won't Be Buying This

I really don't want to see or be seen during a phone call. Besides, if I need to see a picture of something, send it to me as an email attachment.

Then again, I don't understand "camming", either.

Saw it in '64....

Was at the NY World's Fair and stood in line w/ my parents to try the service out. While it was neat to be on "TV" for the first time in my life, even then I had trouble figuring out why people would use it.

(Of course, pre-puberty, the obvious use wasn't yet obvious. -- BTW, how many technologies has sex been the initial "killer app" driving deployment? I can think of a few--like Polaroid pictures, 900 numbers, chat lines, etc. What others?)
