Enough with the download! Give us UPLOAD!

Seriously, once you are in the 5meg+ category, downpipe no longer really matters. Concentrate on uploads now.

I have 9.5down/1.6 up.
I tried sending my friends a gameplay vid we made, holy mother of god, takes ages.

Download speeds are good enough.

Upload speeds are not improving at the rate of download speeds. I have very little use for additional download speeds but I could use significant upgrades in upload speeds.

Cable companies realize that most users are averaging 100kbps or less daily so offering higher upload speeds do not cost them (and they disconnect those bandwidth hogs that try to take advantage of these speeds anyway).

And who is providing 9.5/1.6 for you? HOw much is that? That is probably higher than most of us are getting, at least on the upload.

exactly. i've had 5mbits for a while now. i find most sites can barley do 3mbits. of course, bit torrent and other p2p will max out your 5mbits but not http or ftp.

i'd be happy with some more up. it should be at the very least, one fifth of the downstream.

More upload

I have the 6mbit/608 from SBC and love it. I would agree more upload is what I want. I'm even willing to pay for my upload bandwidth.

it's sad when my internet porn is statements like this, which make me pant .

as for the issue of upload, i was interested this past week to be discussing speeds with a cable installer. i told him i had 3/768 with verizon dsl, and he was installing for my friend cable which was 3/384. he said that the cable companies just don't think anyone really cares about upload; when they increase to 5 down in a few months, they are leaving the upload at 384. so in that respect, dsl beats cable, which in the speed wars has rarely been the case.

Forget More Download, give me Less Price

I don't care as much whether my 3mbps pipe is increased to 5mbps or 10mbps or whatever. I care more that my bill is $45 per month. I'd rather pay less (say around $20 less a month) to get lower speed (e.g. 1.5mbps) than pay the same or more to get more speed.

Upload!!

Yes, Now DSL is kind of stuck, The bells are a bit stupid to realize DSL got an advantage, being the upload. Now, Average DSL has 384 kbps upstream, We could easily have 800kbps-1mbit upload.

To everyone wanting more upload speeds....

I really want more upload speeds as well. Right now, I have 1500/384, and I would LOVE to get an upload in the 768 or megabit range. However, I realize this isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Right now, the main problem with giving more upload speeds are P2P applications. Right now, you can download several gigabyte files with no issues. However, if you are running Shareaza, Bittorrent, Kazaa, etc, then your upload is going full bore 24/7 (unless you set up bandwidth limiting or netlimiter). The main problem with offering so much upload is that people will leave these applications running 24/7 and saturate the connection.

Case in point...

I used to be a network administrator at a college here in MI. Every student had access to the T3 internet connection and could do what they wanted for the most part. However, after P2P was released, it didn't take many students to bring that T3 network to its knees. It was estimated that it only took 25 students to do that.

Don't get me wrong, maybe the ISP will have that bandwidth to burn down the road and we all will get more upload speeds. I have just learned to be patient. To be honest, I like how fast my connection is right now. If everyone gets double upload speeds on my node, does the ISP have the resources to handle it? Will everyone running these applications on my node hinder my connection?

Lets answer those questions first.

make multiple tiers!!!

I would love to see multiple tiers of cable service
For example give us:
784kbps/128up for $19.99
1.5mbps/256kbps for $29.99
3.0mbps/384kbps for $39.99
5.0-10mbps/784kbps-1.5mbps for $49-$59

We should also have an option to pay less for bare connection (no e-mails etc) – I care less if I am being offer 5-10 free e-mail addresses since they are not really free! Just bare connection is what some people want!

Right now I have 1500/800 because I live in SENY and that is all RCN serviced to us. Now the company that bought RCN in my area is increasing my download to 5MB but they are decreasing my upload to 256 and I don't know if I can take that. I use my upload more than the download.

Re: To everyone wanting more upload speeds....

I think you're right on that. Considering that a lot of the upper tier broadband links are symmetrical they probably have the bandwidth but know if they opened it up it'd get sloshed.

They'll probably hold the gate fr a long while then once they get a way to make sure the network will be okay they'll let it go through.

more like horrible.. downgrade from 800 kbps to 256 kbps, especially when you're used to 800 kbps.

I have 1.5mbps/384kbps from SBC now for 29.99.

What is driving the up down thing is network headroom and network bottle necks. As for email accounts and storage capacity for have to think about servers and storing and backing up all of that stuff. SBC has the best DSL footprint. We all want more speed of 29.99 but that is coming with Fiber upgrades. Fiber is not free and copper is not either.

For now you can buy T lines or some other kind of business grade service( just the connection, you will have to provide your own server and such) that will give you more speed than you get from the Cable guys. In the telco world you have a straw -DSL and Cable, a garden hose- T lines and so on.

Carmel isn't a Cablevision franchise??
Well, don't worry. Putnam County is probably on Verizon's list for Fios along with the rest of the NY metro area.

Upload Speeds and XXAA

I'm wondering if the MPAA / RIAA might be putting some subtle pressure on providers to limit uploads to slow down P2P? Whaddaya think?
