| said by l33t :or very ugly... The reason Verizon blocks out Bluetooth is for security reasons, but I think it's sorta stupid. No, you're mistaken. That is NOT why they disabled it.
They disabled it in order to MAKE MORE MONEY. And they said so very clearly:
Verizon says it disabled the Bluetooth file-transfer capability because it conflicted with contractual agreements it has with content providers participating in its "Get It Now" application download service offered with the v710.
"The v710 includes Get It Now, our virtual mall of games and productivity tools that customers can download. The agreements we have with our content providers preclude our allowing anyone to download these applications beyond the phone. The open architecture of Bluetooth could also allow customers to download Get It Now applications beyond the phone," said Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney.
However, to use Verizon's Get It Now service, Verizon Wireless users must pay a fee to download applications, while users could, for example, transfer photos for free using Bluetooth. You'd have to be crazy or lazy to succumb to Verizon and actually order ANYTHING with their stupid button-wasting GetItNow spamware.

Verizon wants you to use THIER network to transfer files, etc. Thus, you use up your minutes and/or pay extra to use the feature. Its all about sucking the money from you. Why give it away for free when there is money to be made? |

I hope that they are slapped with a huge fine and forced to stop disabling features on phones so they make more money. I am going to recommend to all of my clients / friends who are considering verizon to stay away from them at all costs. ... someone if cutting up their wirelines and frustrating them.
Obviously, if they disable the key file-transferring option through bluetooth, some users are going to be very frustrated. Look, I buy a handset device by looking at what features it has and file transfer has become a very important part of it since i now carry a phone which has a memory card in it (nokia 6620). That is why I stay away from Verizon. I like GSM devices better because Cingular (and former AT&T) and T-Mobile don't user such tactics.

| Verizon / Motorola V710
I have one.
It's pretty easy to work around Verizon's defeaturing of the bluetooth file transfers with a Transflash card.
The problem is, that the camera images are so bad that they are hardly worth transferring.
And then there's the matter of the promised firmware upgrade to make the features that Verizon intends to work, work!
In all, this one will cost Verizon their top-end customers.
Now, only if they didn't have the best coverage where I live...

They promised a 1.3 Megapixel Camera, but the pictures i take with it are so bad and grainy its not worth using, not to mention the crippled bluetooth.
I brought a Bluetooth Adapter before I brought the V710 so I could hopefully save my address book and download mp3's to the phone, but sadly I cant even do that. Its a case of false advertising and shotty merchandise. Motorola and Verizon should both be sued. |

When you pay this much of a phone, you DESERVE to have these features enabled. Its all about them making money off thier Get it Now business model.
They Advertised this phone with Bluetooth, not stating that it can only be used with the headset.
They even said themselves that they would come out with a firmware update to enable the transfering of the addressbook to a PC.
Havent even seen that yet |

said by B :However, to use Verizon's Get It Now service, Verizon Wireless users must pay a fee to download applications, while users could, for example, transfer photos for free using Bluetooth. Transferring pictures is done not via GIN apps but via PIX messaging, which is a separate product. Pix can be pulled out of the phone via the TF card, but IMO the V710's camera is one of the worst there is, almost to the point of being useless.
As far as worry over theft of GIN apps goes, BREW "locks" the apps to the phone's ESN anyway, and even the data-cable hacks I'm aware of don't permit access to the part of the phone where BREW/GIN apps are stored.. As far as ringtones, it should be easy enough to permit transfers of ringtones TO the phone via BT but not FROM it. (Of course, allowing people to import their own MP3s/MIDIs would cut into GIN revenues...)
I dumped VZW and the whole V710/GIN mess is one of the reasons why (money and "having too many phones" being the others...)

What are you talking about I use a data cable with all 7 different models of my sprint phones, and I could pull all my data off the phone like phonebook, ringers, and pictures. YOU ARE SURELY MISTAKEN DONT START RUMORS. On some models they have disabled bluetooth networking and on some models it is enabled. But honestly it is somewhat of a security issue to have enabled. Imagine all the idiots who just leave their bluetooth on and its already hackable. |

I also had this issue with Verizon. Before switching to Verizon I visited two stores and asked if "Full" Bluetooth capability was part of the V710. To my surprise it is not. Plus I had issues with the V710 and had it replaced under warrant. At the end of my contract I"m out of here to a provider that is "Honest" and offers full functionality. ->As a California resident Verizon should pay or ??? |
