When it is out and I've had a chance to look at reviews on the system, I'd like to give it a try on my 64 bit Athlon laptop.

I installed the beta on my a64 workstation and it appears to run well. I haven't had a chance to test it much since ther isn't a whole lot of support for it just yet (driverwise anyway). ATI does have drivers for it but when I ran 3DMark it looked like complete garbage. It may be a while before it reaches a mature state. |

Does Intel even have a 64-bit desktop part yet? (Itanium doesn't count.)
Unfortunately, without the dominant market guy in the 64-bit market, we're not gonna see too much 64-bit support until Intel arrives at the party. -- Happy customer of TOROON08CGO | Silentblue.net Canadian DSL Troubleshooting and Why Can't I Get It? FAQs |

Exactly, Ive been running RC1 daily now and aside from driver issues (not MS's fault) its very stable. Without 64 Bit software its still just Windows XP though. AMD might have been early to the game but good software wont be started until Intel announces its joining the party as well and then its really only going to be a gamers OS IMO.
As for the driver issues its not just quirky beta drivers. Make sure to check and see if your current hardware offers 64 Bit drivers... some companies will see this as a chance to offer you new hardware in leu of offering you new drivers for their current line-up. -- Jeremy Clarkson... | Drivers Needed
Hard to imagine that applications (e.g., Adobe Photoshop) are already limited by the 2GB address space in the 32 bit environment. It's about time for 64 bits.
Of course, the REAL issue is with getting 64 bit drivers that support the really interesting hardware (e.g., highly featured, high performance video cards). When I can run a dual display at high resolution and tune HDTV on time delay I'll be impressed.
Perhaps Microsoft placing the product on sale will speed the development and deployment of these drivers.

| Haters, shut the hell up.
Don't like it? Don't buy it.
I am sick and tired of people using wintel boxes, and b*tching about windows. If you are not happy with your OS, there ate plenty of alternatives.
Yet your stupid ass cannot operate anything that was not simplified enough so that a chimp can operate it. That is why you are with Windows, and THAT is why your box gets owned by spyware malware.
Lets be honest, 2k/XP virtually never BSOD's unless drivers/hardware are at fault (Like Nvidia's infinite loop error, etc..)
As for exploits, it is targeted at more, so obviously more are found, as opposed to other platforms. I am not saying that it is as secure as it could ever be, but it is secure enough providing that the user has at least some understanding of wtf they are doing.
I hated Microsoft back in 9x days, since my 9x box was not stable long enough for me to wack off to some vid on the net, and that is why I went to Mandrake, but come 2k and later XP, Microsoft did prove themselves that they CAN make a stable and GOOD OS.
At this time, it is safe to say, that if you have issues with 2k/XP, you simply dont know how to operate a computer properly.
NAT+patched 2k/XP box + user with IQ of over 61 = should have no issues. |

| reply to NoelC Re: Drivers Needed
Most vendors probably have drivers set to release as soon as XP 64 is released. Software will be a different story. It took a while for most software vendors to release 32bit software when the transition started from 16bit. While XP was in beta you didn't see any drivers until RTM. I had to use win2k drivers for hardware that didn't have drivers built in while beta testing XP. Once XP was released the hardware vendors released the updated drivers. As soon as xp 64 hits the shelves all the vendors will release updated drivers. -- If I can't do it today, I'll figure it out by tomorrow. |

64bit OSes and platforms have been around since the mid to late 80s.

Perhaps Microsoft placing the product on sale will speed the development and deployment of these drivers. It certainly will. However, all the hardware vendors should be in porting mode if they want to survive. Microsoft most certainly would have provided them with development platforms already, so the lag time between the XP64 release and the driver releases should be very short. -- Facts... USE THEM! We were saying that about the Digital Alpha back in the 90s and we still got beat by the less advanced Intel platform. AMD may hold on, but once Intel goes head long into this, AMD is going to have a tough time staying on top, especially since Intel got all the Alpha engineers from Digital/Compaq. -- Facts... | 64 bit version of Windows XP
Windows XP sixty four bit version will have the same security flaws, vulnerabilities and exploits just like the thirty two bit editions. "64-bit viruses to follow."
I assumed that that was MS bashing. Not sure what was the point of the post if it wasnt, I doubt that the original poster is simply fascinated from the programmers point of view about a 64 bit virus. We all know how unefficient 32 bit virii apps are |
