Comments on news posted 2005-02-11 10:44:28: Philadelphia's Wi-Fi network terrifies the incumbents, who are afraid the city has set a precedent; so they've not only tried to block such efforts in court, but fund policy front groups to try and discredit city run Wi-Fi. ..

no plan will suit them.

competition is competition and there is no way they are going to agree with anything.

Large Cities

It is good to see large cities at work with this. No offense to those involved, but they may have more resources than smaller communities like the Tri-"Cities" of Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles, IL.

But we'll see what happens.

Hmmmm.........

They need to get their message out in the regular media, not just the tech ones......Bringing the shenanigans to the forefront will hopefully show the people what is going on with the "FUD" that is being slung

Good Article

She makes a LOT of valid points.

I especially like the "...incumbent monopolists have a 95 percent market share where they can leverage their market power over their wires, and a 5 percent market share where they cannot." quote.

That typifies the way they do business.

Tell me why she is fanning this flame?

The City of Philadelphia has already reached an agreement with the local ILEC which states that the City will proceed, unencumbered by the ILEC, and build it's WiFi system.

So, knowing that the agreement is in place, and that City is already moving ahead, why is she taking on the role of attack dog and fanning these flames?

This editorial would have served a greater purpose had it been published six months ago.

It's quite odd that Philly cannot afford to school my kids but they can afford to build stadiums and a city wide wifi system. Meanwhile my kids suffer, and my street stays full of ice and snow, not to mention a million other things that needs to be done first. The Mayor, the CIO and anyone else involved with pushing Wifi should stick Wifi straight up their asses.

I'm not a Philly resident, and I completely understand your anger having visited the city a couple of times and been stunned by it in comparison with, say, New York or Detroit or San Francisco, all of which have their own problems, but MY WORD.

But I think what Neff and Philly are trying to do here is to get private/public partnerships going in which the city doesn't put your money at risk and is fostering an increase in business and revenue into the city that would, in turn, make it more likely that other social problems would be solved.

Increasing competition, entrepreneurialism, and equal access to information for all residents (and schools) seems to me to be one tool in an arsenal of making a city more livable.

But I'm not belittling your concerns about snow, school, or stadiums, nor suggesting that cities spend their money in the most sensible of ways or for the most pressing needs.

Misguided policies and politicians

Muni WiFi and this is how the scenario unfolds.

1.Phily city gov appoints itself the WISP.

2.Private WISPs exit the market and wired ISPs retreat as who would want to compete with an entity backed by taxpayers money, no profit motive and accountability.

3.People start to use govt WiFi and it's quality/coverage immediately becomes a hot political issue.

4.Bureaucrats pour money into it and productivity takes a dive cos, as usual the procurement, operations will have grafts.

5.An army of contractors and govt employees (with govt benefits) try and run the system that generates not enough money to cover its expenses and provides inferior service.

6.Taxpayers money is pumped in to keep the system afloat.

7.Telco's decide not to invest more money in the wired infrastructure either as consumers flock back to them “anyway” sick of govt WiFi.

8.To cover losses govt hikes taxes on the wired ISP connections to subsidize govt WiFi, further disrupting the market forces and forcing Telcos not to invest in the infrastructure further.

9.All Philly residents pay for WiFi in their taxes, irrespective of usage.

I rest my case....:D

Re: no plan will suit them.

You are right!!
As long as the City has all of the bases covered.

There are many cities that are that offer phone, cable and WI-FI in towns that the Regional Bells deemed as to small( not enough money). They all have CLEC certification and now her comes a major city. I hope that the city looked into all of the legal background for what they are doing. I know that Verizon and others are going to hit this with all of the legal wrangling that will force the FCC to rule on WI-FI.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: The first set of WI-FI(VOIP) enabled cell phones are coming out if not now, very soon. The phone will auto switch to WI-FI(VOIP) and back as needed.

Oregon ruled that as long as a city has certification it is within its legal right to offer WI-FI and other network services.

Georgia also has a list of city owned phone and cable tv companies that are offering WI-FI and FIBER to your Door.

Amen Jay.
The latest crisis?
The city couldn't fund public trans so off to Harrisburg and Rendell responds with more "gimmick" state-wide taxes.

Something tells me Comcast has a stake in this.
Too many ILECs in that article.
How I don't know but Verizon and Comcast absolutely hate each other in S.E. PA and Comcast is soon to be a huge contributor to Philly's tax base.

WiFi Why??

From "Wireless Philly" »www.phila.gov/wireless/

It is affordable.

* It can be deployed for $40,000 to $60,000/ sq. mile.
* Wireless connectivity could be provided for the entire city for $7 to $10 million.

A public/private collaboration.

* This collaboration must include not only those organizations that represent the users of this technology but also those that are already investing and providing wireless services today.

Executive Committee

* The City will convene an Executive Committee to establish this collaboration and to outline how a mutually beneficial partnership can be structured to unwire Philadelphia.

Once again, I ask my fellow Philadelphians "Should we pay for Philly WiFi or spend $7 to $10 million dollars on (pick one) schools, police, housing for the poor, elderly care or after-school programs?"

Exactly. And how many police officers did they lay off this year so far? How many more are they laying off next? This is crazy, utterly crazy. Sure lets get city wide WiFi and get on your computer surfing the net on the park bench, but watch out because your computer will be stolen off you, you'll be mugged, raped, and shot because their are no damn cops around. Unreal. And because there are 50 kids in a class being taught by an incompetant pissed off teacher they'll be morans running around not even knowing what WiFi is in the first place or what those things are on the computer with all those symbols like a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k.... etc.
