And...

And it's cheaper! (at least in my area)

Here you can get 3000/768 DSL for $44, and 3000/256 Cable for $50. Most people are going to choose the cheaper option.

And if you want, you can get a package that's less than $30 a month, if you don't need all the speed. Cable doesn't have this option.

The only downfall is, people have to be fairly close to the CO to get 3000/768.

There are only so many people with in 18,000 ft of a CO. How will DSL achive those numbers? Its not like Verizon in rolling out RTs at a fast rate. Verizon, ugh

Yah, luckily, I'm within 7K feet of the CO.

I think Verizon has mostly put a stop to any DSL expansion, for now, and are only concentrating on FIOS.

My area....

In my area, DSL is slower and more expensive.

5000/384 Cable = $39.99
3000/384 DSL = $54.99 (last time I checked)

It seems that the SBC areas are the only ones with fairly cheap DSL.

Same here, except the cable has low caps. For the same price as unlimited 320/240 DSL, I have 2mbps/256kbps cable with a 10GB cap, which is more than I use.

This trend will just continue.

Until cable companies can wire more homes, DSL is be the winner. It's been 10 years since Cox told me that I would be able to get cable in 1 year. It still isn't here.

I'm sure that cable is fine for all the poor families. But, anyone with any money at all will choose to go with a more reliable option like DSL.

Distance

I don't live within 18,000 feet of the CO. Not everyone does and this is where cable comes in. There is no distance requirement for cable so unless the Bells can get past this distance requirement, DSL isn't an option for those of us that are "in the sticks" and probably never will be.
Thank God for cable.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I would be happy with either!!!!@!##!@#!#

Please excuse my anger. I hate dialup, or paying over $100/month for 100k IDSL.

i love comcast but..the only reason that the number is 41% is because quest won't get off of their lazy @$$ and wire this section of the town (for some reason the area directly adjacent to us is wired???). i want some of that 816 kb upload

Re: My area....

In my area - Cable = 54.99 + rental (or 42.99 + rental with bundle) for 3000/384

DSL = 24.95/ 1500/384, 36.95 for 3000/512 and 49.95 for 6000/608.

And as soon at the local telco start upgrading the pedastals in the neighborhoods for dsl2, then were going to see a much larger increase in DSL subscription.

Let's hope the count of FTTP subscribers beats DSL and HFC by 2008.

Interleaving is one of the things that allows them to deliver the higher speeds. You can have fast, or low latency. I alot of cases, you can't have both. there's no free lunch in physics.

Cable has more customers wired right now, in the US. Did you even read the article.

I'm sure that cable is fine for all the poor families. But, anyone with any money at all will choose to go with a more reliable option like DSL.
Wow, what an ignorant and arrogant statement. How is cable for poor people? Looking at the posts here, I would say DSL is for poor people since they have the $20-$30 price for the slow 1.5Mbps and less speeds. As for reliability, that's all a matter of local systems. Both cable providers by me have had a 99.9% uptime in the last 3 years(that has been the time I have compared them).

I have money, and it's going to my faster cable service, instead of funding SBC.

Re: Here's to Hoping

Unless Verizon is going to wire 30+ million people by then, I don't see it happening, since SBC and the other lame thinking telcos are only going to install a lame FTTN system and still use copper to the home.

If Verizon wants to strike up a franchise in my area and wire me with FTTP I'll take it.

I'll Never Use PPOE....

The thought of one server at the ISP processing all traffic for all subs is mind boggling. Why would you want to be a part of a network with that much useless traffic on it?

At least around here, DSL uses PPOE. PPOE causes headaches galore for me, mainly the hardware crashing or not getting authenticated properly on a regular basis.

It is annoying to setup a login for PPoE, but I've had no problems getting it to work.
