Comments on news posted 2005-03-01 11:53:06: SBC is running a promotion throughout March where users can get $19.95 DSL if they sign a one year contract, order on-line, and buy standard local service (no choice, since "Naked" DSL isn't available). Users usually have to sign up for the $48. ..

Price drop is good, but faster speeds would be better.

LOL!

$19.99 per month, *PLUS* SBC's crappy phone service, *PLUS* "un-fees", *PLUS* distance limitations dictate you will probably not get near the speed you should. PASS!

well

"Users usually have to sign up for the $48.95 All Distance Package to see the $20 DSL price point."

Wait so that's 68.95 + all sorts of other fees.
And getting a decent conenction for $39+ voip for $25 only comes out to 64.

Why can't we just get DSL for this price

If SBC can offer DSL for this price, why can't it be a standard for all minimum speed DSL nation wide?

Re: LOL!

Beats the $45 Comcast some users in my area pay, plus crappy CATV service, plus franchise fees, plus monthly usage caps, plus monthly usenet caps, plus crappy upload speeds, plus constant price increases...

Grass is always greener.

Re: GREAT DEAL

Its definately worth having a land line with just local service for anything important. Tons of people don't get affected by any limitations either. I've had 6.0/608 for over a year now and its great!
The only thing that sucks is the fees, yes, but cable and other DSL providers all have the same stupid fees tacked ontop of the prices.
I've got quite a bit of relatives and friends in MI in various places, and this should easily be able to get a few more to finally switch from dialup. It really sucks for the few people I know in MI in Verizon territory. Verizon doesn't seem to offer any DSL at all in any of the areas they are the ILEC here.
And our cable company, Comcast, charges upwards of $60/month + fees and taxes for basic cable, and its another $60/month for laggy high-ping slow-upload internet access. I don't know anybody that can get Comcast who can't also get SBC. Its only the few people in Verizon territory that only have Comcast's monthly-price-hikes as an option.

Re: well

Key word there is "usually". But looks to me to be more like an "Only If"

From »www.sbc.com/gen/press-room?pid=5···id=21592

said by SBC:
For the next 31 days, new residential subscribers to SBC Yahoo! DSL Express service who order online through sbc.com or sbc.yahoo.com will receive 12 months of the popular high-speed Internet access service for only $19.95 a month. ... Customers who do not order over the Web can receive SBC Yahoo! DSL Express for $19.95 a month when they commit to a one-year term and subscribe to the popular SBC unlimited local and long distance calling plan, All Distance, for $48.95 a month.
I read that to be, if you order online you don't need to bundle. If you call in your order, you do need to bundle.

Re: Why can't we just get DSL for this price

Because other companies waste their time being greedy or catoring only to the weathly areas.

Look at what you can get from Cox for $29.99 in Las Vegas:
A great 256K/128K connection! Wow, so fast! Oh wait, thats $39.99 because you have to rent the modem on top of that!

I suppose its only fair to look at the regular package at »www.cox.com/LasVegas/highspeedin···rred.asp which totals 49.99 afer modem rental and gives you 4.0/256 - but look closer: 7.5 Gigabyte transfer limit per month!
According to google »www.google.com/search?q=7.5+GB%2···n+Kb%2Fs thats ALMOST 24Kb/s! You would be better off on a 33.6K dialup for half the price!

Re: LOL!

What price increases? My Comcast HSI has been the same for 3 years now.

My cable TV/HSI/Digital Phone service has NEVER been down.
Also, I have never seen these "caps" you speak of. YMMV.

What do you mean "usually"?

In reading the PR on this it says you get the price without a bundle requirement if you order online, but you have to bundle if you phone in the order.

Order online...no bundle
Order by phone...bundle

Unless I read it wrong.

Re: LOL!

I used to have Comcast, just for basic TV, for a outraguous $60/month after 3 price increases in only 1 year. The picture went out more than the Dish Networks TV I now enjoy for half the price.

Re: well

No, what he said is correct. If you order via their website, you don't need to bundle anything except basic dialtone.
Its just basic phone service (which people should and do have anyways) not long distance (which is expensive and replaced by calling cards or cell phones for most people).

Re: Why can't we just get DSL for this price

I've had SBC DSL for 1.5 years now and its been rock-solid stable and very dependable. Its also a good deal. I have 1500-down/384-up for $26.95/month. The price isn't a special either. It'll be the same as long as I keep the service.

Re: What do you mean "usually"?

Yes, that is correct. Before March 1 it required the expensive all-distance bundle either way. As of today, if you order online, you don't need to bundle anything except basic dialtone. If you call in your order, they still make you get the useless all-distance plan though.
