Charter is bringing back the $10 fee for internet only customers. Was $44 a month, now it will be $54 or so. That's more than %11 they are raising. |

One of the benefits of DSL is that it can be significantly cheaper than cable. Raising the rates won't help Verizon get more customers, especially those migrating from dialup. |

I know some like to diss it, but I switched from the "definitely slower line" (DSL) to Comcast cable and haven't looked back... and NO contracts. Month to month at my discretion. And Verizon wants $37 a month for the same deal? Why? When you can get double the speed for five bucks a month more? On top of that, I don't even have to pay for a phone line like I did when I had DSL. |

For those willing to be 2-3 weeks without service switching is a simple phone call. Guess if they take a little at a time Verizon thinks people won't bother switching...what's $3 or $5. But I'm guessing this is only the beginning of Verizon's return to their old ways.
Meanwhile cable operators would say this is great for their business. -- Don't get it, demand it! The Anime Network www.theanimenetwork.com |

said by Thisp: Let the DSL user with 3000/768, unlimited transfer, ten day retention on most usenet binary groups(without bandwidth caps or transfer limits), and an ISP that'll give you a free wireless router all for under $40/month cast the first stone.
I suppose they found out that people will be willing to pay more since so many people are migrating from the cable dorm internet. I call it dorm cable because they implement throttling and capping so they can have high kbps numbers at affordable prices, to the point where you're not getting half of what you paid for.

I can't stand contracts, but if it was FIOS i wouldn't mind signing on the spot committing my self to more than 1 year. But to commit myself to DSL, I don't think so, I'd rather pay my $50 and have the option to switch every month to a different ISP. |

Damn right, for what, about 4 dollars more a month i can tripple my speed with cable? Screw DSL at that price. I want govt regulation back. What i'd really like is a summer boycot of services to encourage lowering prices so we dont pay out the rear for them. |

said by Eloquorius : Why? When you can get double the speed for five bucks a month more? The answer is simple. TOS/AUP. People like unlimited use and usenet that's not capped at 2GB. Some also aren't interested in the 30% "How dare you not have CATV" penalty.
I have both DSL and HSI and if I had to choose between the two I would take DSL due to 768kbps uploads and Comcast's restrictive TOS/AUP and lack of options (eg static IP). But you're right...for typical users who aren't warez whores gobbling up 100GB a month...the lure of cable is getting stronger with every DSL price increase. -- Don't get it, demand it! You won't know if you're on one of their overloaded nodes or not(read: where people use the internet for things other than email and web browsing) until you get a letter stating you've been abusing the service. By then, I think you'll have already made your decision to get a new ISP. -- The Problem With Music. Our Rationale Time to rewrite the DMCA. |

| reply to Eloquorius Its funny seeing this after having a flood of people on those OOL topics chatting about how they switched to Verizon because they were absolutely sure that Verizon would never raise their rates. Of course this doesn't take away from the wrong doings OOL is doing but just proves that a ton of ISPs out there are not infallible to greed, so you might as well expect none are.
Also heres something to know. Why does Verizon still sell there DSL in downtown NYC for $49.99 a month and when asking them for a price change they claim that they do not sell the $29 a month package there. Does anybody know why wouldn't they? Just something to think about thats all. |

What about the 100%(or better) "How dare you not have an active phone line" penalty that most if not all telcos have. $20 a month DSL through SBC seems nice, but then I would have to have an active phone line which is $45, so that makes it as expensive as Comcast's 6Mbps/768Kbps without tv service. |

| Makes me happy I moved.
I had Verizon DSL for two years. After the service went down hill for almost an entire summer (03), then being told I shouldn't have service at my distance, and then being told I would could never be upgraded but should be happy paying $34.95 a month for 768/128 when people closer in recieved 1.5/384 for the same money I called Cox and had HSI installed and dumped Verizon entirely. Went from 90Kbps down to 400+ -- 4 More years and we won't have a country. |

What they need to do is add another speed upgrade to the 1 year contract deal, then I wouldn't mind so much. |

Most people "need" a POTS line anyway...this in comparison to millions of DBS customers who are affected by the HSI penalties. And for us former ATTBi customers...this penalty from Comcast was a new thing that blindsided us.
Now of course I would agree with you...there are significant numbers of people who are cellular only or are cellular and VoIP...but I'm guessing those numbers don't compare to the number of DBS customers that the CC HSI penalties affect. -- Don't get it, demand it! "Verizon hopes the price increases will give people more incentive to stay with the service rather than defect to its cable competitors."
"We want to reward customer loyalty," said Bobbi Henson, a company spokeswoman. "It costs us more to have people on that kind of plan because they are not as loyal."
I guess that Bobbi Henson does not consider me a 'loyal' customer even though I've been a DSL customer for the last 4 1/2 years. When I first signed up, I had a 1 year contract and I've been month to month ever since. I think I've been very loyal. -- Write your questions down on the back of a $20 dollar bill and send them to me |

It boils down to how much your willing to pay for INTERNET access. When I signed up for Verizon, supposedly for $29 a month I thought it was a fair deal compared to unlimited dial up access. Just a few dollars more. After signing up, my bill was actually $35 a month, then $39 a month. Now I wonder if there is really any value in this INTERNET stuff. It's definitely something that is more a luxury than a necessity. I even wonder if it's worth buying a new computer every three or four years just to keep up with the "new" technology. I am considering canceling my Verizon DSL in the next few years. |

| Dropped Verizon
I actually dropped verizon because of this, recently I would get random disconnects and verizon told me more than a month ago that they aware of the problem and "Verizon Engineers" are fixing the problem, month later still problems. Then I get a letter that says they are raising the price. My neighbor a few houses down has cable so I try it, he gets 3mbs down, and I only got 1.3mbs in my house. So I call my cable company (Adelphia) and they offer it for 26.95 for 1 year without contract, which is better then Verizon's 29.95 for a 1 year contract. |
