Comments on news posted 2005-03-11 16:26:16: CNET has more on a Verizon pricing change we'd already told you about; the company is hoping to migrate people toward one year contracts by raising DSL rates on non-contract customers. Customers who paid $34.95 will now pay $37. ..

Didn't even blink twice...

I'm happy with verizon, and they've been good to me. I signed up for the one year plan within hours of reading the letter. I doubt that something great will come my way that'll sway my love for verizon, but if it does, oh no...thats $49 down the tube. Oh well.

This pricing change does not affect everyone. Excluded:

Of more interest than the few buck a month savings (IMO) are the early termination fees... $49 or $99 depending on the how long you've had Verizon's equipment (modem/router). This takes a lot of power away from irate users calling in to the Retention Team. They used to offer free months of service to just about anyone who hinted at leaving Verizon... now they'll be happy to just remind you of this fee.

Why?

Makes me wonder why they want to force a lock-in on a long-time user such as myself. Do they have something up their sleeve? Why try to force someone who has been a faithful customer for years into a contract? Has anyone read the fine print yet? What are they hiding?

They have me worried enough to start looking at alternatives.

Only 6 months if my thinking is right

(probably isn't but...)

$49 termination fee applies
So, in a way, it's really a 6 month contract, since after 6 months and $48 in savings (($38 - $30) x 6) , you would only break-even (okay lose a whole buck) if you leave.:p

Verizon $29.95 but half the speed!

I have had Verizon DSL for several years and about a yeat ago the upgraded me to 1.5 Mbps download. I was paying $34.95/month. Th=ey announced the $29.95 price with 1 year contract and the price increase on month-to-month. I took the $29.95, and immediately found my speed reduced to 738 Kbps. I phoned Verizon technical assitance, and they told me that was all the speed I could get because I was 18,000 feet from the CO. However, I am less than 11,000 feet from the CO and my house has not moved! When I told them I had been getting 1.5 Mbps previously, they admitted they had inserted a loading coil in my line which made it electrically 18,000 feet. When I asked them to remove it, they said the can't. When I had them bump my call uip to a higher level, they promised I would be back to the higher speed within 5 hours. That was Friday, and it is still 738 Kbps! So much for truthfulness from Verizon! SO beware when Verizon comes bearing gifts! The $29.95 rate has a hook in it!

Re: Verizon $29.95 but half the speed!

It pays to be persistent in complaining to Verizon. I called Billing again today, and told them they had promised last Friday to put me back to 1.5 Mbps and hadn't. They said they would adjust my account and I should see the change in less than 72 hours. However, when I got home about 5 hours later, my speed was back to 1,500 Kbps download/340 Kbps upload.
