| Just the first of many I bet
Speaking of firsts FIRST POST woot woot.
This is just the first of many logistical nightmares that are coming as more and more companies and individuals are discovering this place called the internet. Now the criminals and just plain crazies are coming onto the superhighway now and no highway patrol is any where in sight. -- Ways to Relieve Stress #10. | This is nothing new. This has gone on forever. It was far more difficult when the Internic controlled everything. Now that any fly by night moron can be a registrar, it's just easier. Tom, Dick, and Harry are registrars and they hire the cheapest labor they can find (which usually translates to idiots), to man the phones and provide customer support. Larger organizations that have fully automated systems are pretty easy to hack with just a pinch of social engineering. |

| domain registrations
I've always used Dotster for my domain registrations. They were one of the "original" registrars and I think they're very trustworthy.
I've had friends transfer domains to them, and if everything isn't correct, they won't do it, but they are very helpful.
They may not have funny commercials and hot babes like GoDaddy, but I wouldn't use anyone else.
Side note: I NEVER use my webhosting company to assist with the domain registration. |

| What is NOT covered
What is not mentioned, and would be the much more interesting story is what was behind the hijacking?
Was this a spammer out to harvest email addresses? Was this an identity theft scheme? Who is this anonymous person behind the Yahoo address? What is the link between the hijacking and the various places the web and mail pointers were directed? Who owned the accounts in Canada, the UK, and Australia?
This leaves me with more questions than answers! Anyone have any info on the above???

| ICANN has made hijacking easier.
They actually relaxed the rules governing domain transfers. This change made cnet headlines a couple of months back. This is ironic they would be investigating how it happened. We can in fact expect to see more of this. But ICANN's changes is the reason why.
My registrar is Godaddy. When ICANN's changes went into effect, my reg. sent me an e-mail explaining the changes and also their ensueing changes to prevent disasters made so easy by ICANN's idiocy.
Godaddy now provides a method to "lock" my various domains. No changes are allowed without my express approval. ICANN's changes basically allow changes to domains unless owners say no instead of not allowing unless owners give the OK. This rates as one of the stupidest moves yet by an Internet rules maker.
Godaddy is in my opinion a top notch operation who is looking out for their customers. Unlike others(and ICANN) I have dealt with. I'm sure there are other good registrars. But I'm stickking with godaddy who has taken care of me as a service provider should. |

| said by nixen :Probably someone that was disgruntled with Panix. I have had a panix account since their very early days, always found them good, competent, and fair. Alexis runs a good shop! Whoever did this opened themselves up to trouble, and it was fairly expensive. There's more to it than revenge.
