Let CA know what you think.

I spent about 15 minutes on the phone trying to lodge a complaint with CA. I was finally given a email address to send complaints to:

myetrustclientadvocate@ca.com

This forum is great, but we should be saying it directly to CA.

oops, meant to tag this to the end of the claria/pestpatrol discussion.

Well , when you have a Claria exec that was appointed to the Dept. of Homeland Security's "Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee".What do you expect ?

»Gator in the Homeland Security Dept.

The system is ****** up.

Pest patrol just lost a lot of credibility by giving up to Claria demands and now the backlash will start and rightfully so.They should have known from the AAW/When U story that it is a BAD idea to sellout like this. Now we'll have to wait and see if they will come back on their decision due to the pressure of their consummers and various groups (like AAW did) or if they simply don't care.In that case , they are finished and i could care less. The REAL antispyware community will still be there to go against Claria and their less than honest affiliates.

The irony is funny.

With these ad companies going on a lawsuit threat binge, most of these companies don't have the resources or don't want to expend the resources to fight Claria.

Now here comes the irony:

All the people that whine about Microsoft, yet continue to use Microsoft products, will be forced to use another Microsoft product, their Spyware tool, because Microsoft is the only one that could monetarily crush Claria.

I find that highly amusing.

what I'd like to see

Is a OSS piece of software like ClamAV that would allow the users to add their own definitions like ClamAv does. Also a site that keeps up to date signatures of said questionable software (be it spyware/adware/etc) or anything we want to add to our own definitions file. Not that the software would actually have to remove the software; but, at least, notifiy me that it is on my system and then I'll go hunt down a removal remedy for said software.

false positives

I always felt from my 2 or 3 experiences with PP, that is gave off to many false positives for me. Using Opera 99.9% of the time, I NEVER get any spyware/adware anyway!

listing of CA/Claria on my web site

To the various folks who wrote to ask why this occurrence isn't listed on my Threats site: I'm out of the country this week -- a bit of much-needed "vacation" -- and I don't have good enough connectivity to update my page. But rest assured, I'll update my page as soon as I'm back, most likely late Friday night. Apologies for the delay.

Ways to fight back

This is copied from Cloudeight Forums:

in response to plea by Herablist to do something about all this, please read and RESPOND via the web form provided, as a first step. See below:

Thundercloud & Eightball's Rant

Educating Corporate America

With all the lawsuits and cease and desist orders being thrown at the anti-spyware community by spyware and adware developers, we've come up with an idea that will hit the spyware/adware people right where it counts - the wallet. But, we cannot do it alone. We really need all of you to read this Rant (it's not that long) and help us; the two of us cannot change anything, but the thousands of you can.

Today, with your help, we are going to educate Dell Computer Corporation. We have used Dell desktops for the last 7 years. We've purchased many computers from Dell, including computers for our children, but we will never purchase another Dell as long as their advertising dollars are funneled to spyware and adware companies whose products clog millions of computers, some of them Dells'.

On Dell's Web site (in several locations including this one) they warn you about installing spyware. In fact, Dell says that a great percentage of its tech calls are spyware related. It would appear on the surface that Dell is committed to protecting your computer from spyware. But, Dell's public and private personas, however, seem to be vastly different. Please click here to read the rest of this 'Rant'.

It takes more then just a few voices.. please send the above rant to as many friends and family, post on other forums, spread the word. Everyone keeps wanting someone to make a first step.. lets try this one.

What is a computer for anyway ???

If we all have to start running multiple apps for Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Popups, Anti-etc...
then what space and cpu cycles are going to be left to run anything else ?
If all of this isn't put into a Network Appliance, and taken out of the PC altogether,
then it isn't even worth talking about cause its gonna get a lot worse before it gets any better.

Next thing, the Network Appliances will be so bogged down searching packets,
that we'll all need a Giganet connection just to get 100mb network speeds across the internet...

Pest Patrol

Some stinkin spyware hijacked my browsers so they slowed to a crawl. I ran Adaware and Spybot and they couldn't find anything except for some cookies. I downloaded Pest Patrol since it's part of Adelphia's free security suite and it a found bunch of programs that I deleted, browser works fine now. Seems like a superior program to me.

I haven't seen WhenU in years since I got rid of Gator, but if you have a problem with it you could always download Spybot to detect it.
