People want DVRs, they want control of what they record and when.

It is the future. Lower TCO for both the CableCo, and the end user.

No FF=Few DVR buyers

If TiVo wanted a savior this is it. A massive move toward this type of setup will quickly revive the 3rd party DVR market single handedly.

Great news for TIVO. Looks like the video capture devices will also be rolling in the money if the conveniences of the video recorders stop being so convenient.

just what I wanted

"...though they'll be disabling any fast-forward ability to placate the TV industry and advertisers."

You know, I just woke up this morning and thought "wouldn't it be great if my cable company offered me a product with less functionality?"

this is just swell!

Re: Won't Fly

Plus it locks them into that provider. If they switch they must get a new device.

Also, all of what you record stored on a cable company controlled box? You would not think that they may gather any sort of numbers on what you watch? Just think of some of your favorite TV channels eliminated because nobody was recording any shows on that channel.

More like elimination of the lessor watched channels that nobody watches.

I'm hip to this idea. You already can't record VOD, but that's okay with me. Anything that reduces the number of devices in my living room is a good thing.

Of course, if they still stick me with the bulk of a set-top box I won't be happy. I realize some sort of module will be needed, but please make it small.

Yeah right!! I was looking for just the thing that would help me see all those commercials. I mean FF on my DVR is a feature I have been begging Comcast to remove. {/sarcasm}

how come

Hasn't a vcr been invented yet with a cheap 300gig hard-drive?

I'm not talking tivo where you pay a monthly subsription, I mean just a vcr with a hard drive?

Well, there aren't any VCRs with hard drives, but there are several alternatives to the monthly subscription fee boxes. They just aren't user friendly enough for mainstream.

Media Center PC's

Media Center PC's are the magic word. Depending on how much you want to spend on them you can build one for $500 (single tuner TV card, analog only) to $2000 (the works, double tuner digital card, mucho drivespace, dvd burner)

And you have full control over what you record. Remotes can be bought for $50.

And i'm right. I'm always right, but this time I'm a little more right then I usually am.

Who's the customer, anyway?

Is it the subscriber who pays the bill, or the entertainment industry? The industry certainly likes the idea, but then again, they don't fork over the monthly fee.

Too bad the sheeple will probably follow Big Cable and buy the new service.

Cable providers don't care if users grumble. All they see are dollar signs. They understand only when people vote with their wallets.

Without FF, this idea is totally DOA. What idiot is thinking this stuff up?? I can't believe that they are actually spending money on it. But hey, they will just jam another price increase down our throats so it really doesn't cost them a thing.

Hmmm...I record VOD all the time, but not with Comcast's DVR. TiVo and a programmable remote with macro capability makes it a one-button affair. Then burn to DVD on the same box. Life is good.

Re: Media Center PC's

can you point me in the direction of a good $50 remote? I am currently using a wireless mouse and keyboard (the second I have purchased)-- they don't seem to be able to make one that can work with a range of more than 6-7'

Announcements like this...

Are the one satisfying thing about Cox: They don't buy into the status quo very often. They're keeping DVR because they know people want it. Hell, I could theoretically record a PPV if I wanted, or a VOD - I just have to 'trick' the box a little.

Yeah, I'm poor =) I use TWC's DVR because I don't have the cash for a Tivo.
