So they get they get a judgement against this company... so what; big deal... then what?
They continue doing what they do? What happens if they just move their operations "Off Shore" where the long arm of the U.S. law has little or no effect?
Does anyone beleive this is going to change anything?
I'm not holding my breath on this... on the surface, it seems like a perfetly good waste of time and $$$$$ to me.... but that's my observation...
Time's going to tell on what happens here... bet they move the operatons off shore.....

The way I see it is if they're having to spend time and money to fend off class action suits, it's less profit for the owners and less money for development of more of their crap. I'd be happy to see more people throwing money at this because more money thrown at suing them means less money for them and if the people filing the suits want to spend their money to do it, more power to them.
As a bonus, it's more bad publicity for the companies being sued.

I agree 100%. Legal battles are very expensive to fight, just being involved in one can kill a company regardless of who wins. Hopefully this sets some sort of precedent, and we'll see more of the same. |

I have little sympathy for people whose PC's are clogged with junkware.
Keeping this crap off your machine isn't rocket science. Here are some tips, not neccessarily in order of importance.
1. Don't click "OK" on anything and everything that pops up in IE.
2. Learn the difference between an actual windows dialog box and a IE pop-up that tries to look like an dialog box.
3. Don't install any browser toolbars except Yahoo and Google.
4. Don't install anything that promise to help you find porn, warez, or good prices.
5. Actually read what you are agreeing to when you install crap like Bonzi Buddy, Morpheus, Kazaa, BearShare, etc.
6. Learn to love Firefox. Only use IE when you have to.
7. Get a decent firewall, or better yet a hardware firewall/router. Block all the ports you don't need.
8. If you are too lazy to check for windows updates, then turn on auto-update to do it for you. If people actually bothered to update their machines correctly a lot of worms/bugs/trojans/viri wouldn't become nearly so widespread.
9. Get a good virus checker. Keep is updated. Actually scan you email attachments. Don't open attachments you were not expecting.
10. Don't be an idiot and fall for phishing scams.
11. Get a GOOD Spyware checker and keep it updated. Run it at least once a week.
12. Learn at least the basics of how files, directories, programs, and shortcuts work.
And most importantly, stop thinking your PC is an appliance. It's a complicated device that was designed for compatability first, ease of use second, and security third. |
