One more thang... OK two

The Cartoon Network Clone Wars series was released both on CN the TV Network and also on CN's website for free download. I downloaded all 20 episodes, yet I still shelled out $13 for the DVD when it came out later, despite already having a 100% legal good looking copy, and despite not even upgrading to a 5.1 surround mix. How many others did likewise? (I couldn't resist - the review said it was the only Star Wars product which hadn't undergone modification for the DVD release, so I snapped it up before Lucas became aware of this oversight and CGI'd in Jar Jar or something.)

Also, Lucas, if you are going to add new scenes for the Episode III DVD, could weesa pleesa pleesa PLEESA see the scene we've all been waiting for - the one where Jar Jar is drawn and quartered by the Sandpeople and their Banthas? Or killed and eaten by the Ewoks because they believe he is the devil? Or perhaps just put him in the airlock and press the "evacuate" button - I don't care, I just been waitin' six years for Gungan Gore and it's the main thing I felt was missing from Sith. Heck, you can make an entire standalone movie - maybe just do some CGI to Nine Inch Nails' Broken video so you change the victim to Jar Jar. Or put him in a cell with Hannibal Lecter. Or put him in the Geonosis arena to fight hand-to-hand to the death with Stepin Fetchit. "Two stereotypes enter, one stereotype leaves!" OK, you get the idea. Think of the merchandising opportunities, you could sell Jar Jar punching bags, dart boards, etc...

The reality of course with copies of not yet released, or only just released film on p2p is most certainly insiders - but it's easier (and more fitting to their cause) to blame the p2p networks.

The simple logic behind this has and will continue to escape them. If the content isn't there, no one can download it.

Personally I saw EPIII on Saturday at my local Muvico 24. Went to a 3:35PM matinee, paid $7.00 a ticket. Buy tix online an d pickup at the theater. Walked right in, no line to wait in. What was funny were the people standing online for the 4:00PM show. Dude...walk this way man. There were empty seats in ours.

Despite my rather kickin HT setup...I don't see much reason to go download this stuff.

Lost Revenue

One other thing I just thought of. All this talk about lost revenue for the movie studios... what about lost revenue for the people who make money bootlegging movies? There seems to be rather a large market for that - large enough that I doubt BitTorrent can dent it at this time, especially in the third world. But while we can debate the amount Lucas may or may not be out in terms of the bootleg, we should not overlook the fact that if enough people get hep to BitTorrent then the people who sell these things could theoretically be priced out of business.

I seem to remember hearing that a very inferior copy of Star Wars could be had, if you were one of the lucky few to have a VCR back before it was officially released on home video. This version is the one without "A New Hope" at the front, or so I hear. Seriously, I do not have a copy.

The specific product in question seems to be not just SW3:RotS but SW3:RotS@Home. If Lucas gave us a way to enjoy that product right now for a reasonable fee, I don't think the workprint would be much more than a curiousity, a collector's item. Until then, I wonder if the free availability of said DVD bootleg hurts Episode III any more than the VHS (Beta? U-Matic??) copies of 1977 Star Wars hurt the ticket sales at that time. And I wonder if the bootleggers made more per copy for a 1970's Star Wars tape or a 2005 Sith DVD?

BTW, I skipped Thursday afternoon's work (speaking of lost revenue) and went to the noon show. There were a few things that bother me badly, but a lot to like as well. I had read the book three weeks ago, which I had borrowed from a local library, and had a similar impression. Overall, I wish Anakin was a character I could care about, because then his turning to the dark side would be something I could care about as well. It still seemed fairly sterile, which is a complaint I have about most of this new trilogy. But, I reflected, what if Lucas had never gotten around to making these three? We'd all be bitching and moaning about that, and I think that'd be far worse. I'll take Sith, in all its imperfect glory. But I'd like my non-SE original trilogy DVDs, please.
