Comments on news posted 2005-06-03 13:15:13: As we mentioned last week, AOL's new Netscape browser comes with a "trust rating" system (allowing "safe" sites to use ActiveX controls and the IE rendering engine) that trusts some very dubious marketing partners (Direct Revenue, Hotbar). ..

Ok, let's take something good (Firefox), and add on the worst features of IE (ActiveX) and then bugger it up as only AOL can and release it.

Just use Firefox, and IE for sites that need it (Windows Update). Problem solved.

The problem is that MOST of the market is still about name rather than performance. Far too many people still LOVE AOL, and couldn't name the different browser options to save their lives. Whats that, AOL has their own browser? Well then that must be the best one for me.......

And that is fine with me. I like Active X. I like web exploits. I like security holes.

This is o true. Most people don't know that there are other browsers besides IE, just the way Microsoft wants it.

Shoot, my mom doesn't even know it's called Interent Explorer. She says things like "I clicked on the Internet icon, but it took me too SmartSearch instead."

weakness

I myself noticed the weakness of this trust system. Until that, I actually thought that maybe this new Netscape would be the best browser to put on systems for the less technically oriented that didn't like to switch browsers. But when I noticed that it was almost always defaulting to IE engine even though I'd selected Gecko core as the default, it was out of the question.

Is there any way to completely disable the trust system?

finished? nada. most people just turn it on and use it without a clue. this makes aol's netscape very happy because aol will take a profit where they can get it.

Uninstall Netscape 8.

I appreciate the concept of a hybrid browser, but when making a hybrid, you're supposed to take the BEST parts of each component rather than the worst. OY!

Bleh

I stopped using Netscape when they released version 6. Went back to IE, then tried Firefox when it came back, now I use both IE and FF.

Firefox is just like a striped down version of IE.

Maxthon?

Doesn't Maxthon have the capability to use the Gecko engine? Wouldn't that be a "great" browser?

Re: They are finished

you are talking about the general public & using ie. most of them just call it the little blue e then ask do i do a double left click or right click and yes, they are serious so, how hard is it to be better than ie, well, how hard is it to breathe in then breathe out & repeat when it is convenient.

TrustE is useful as a deception alert

I use the TrustE symbol to tell me that a site is hiding something or has in the past been unethical in some way. Comes in handy, though it's not what they intend it to be used for. Legitimate sites tend not to need that tag to conceal what they are doing and not make the effort to get it.

Most people don't care that there are other browsers. All they want to do is turn on their pc, get connected to the internet, check e-mail, maybe chat and do some suffering. How it's done is of little concern. It's the same attitude they have at work. I know too many people that only care about doing what they need to with their computer and not how what works. And these are the people you'll never change. And they probably barely know who or what Microsoft is.
