A good plan

Cruisin' is great for certain busy people (old and slow people too but). Having the ability to roam the decks and your stateroom with a laptop and simply having wireless internet (even if it's slow) is awesome. Smart move on the cruise line.

Slow was right...

Its 5mbps down, 256kbps up shared between all passengers!

Now granted this should be plenty of bandwidth, except for when Mr. Warez decides he needs to pull down his latest newsgroup pr0n while seeding his favorite file on BT.

Some kind of bandwith management might not be a bad thing.

Well, that bandwidth management is cost! It is realy costly to use internet on the cruise.

Internet Withdraw

You go on a cruise to get away from it all! Go out there to relax and enjoy the view. You will have plenty of time to surf the Internet when you get back from your vacation. I swear. Some people need the Internet everywhere they go.

Well... the Internet isn't just a toy anymore, a lot of people rely on it for a lot of things. For example, my previous boss who was the owner of a large stock brokerage firm enjoyed going on vacation, but he also wanted to receive daily reports on how certain stocks are doing so he can tell the staff to sell or buy. Having e-mail availability on a cruise would allow us to e-mail him the reports in the morning and for him to check them over. Instead, he'd call us (and his lesiure) and we'd scramble to get all the reports.

Also, wouldn't it be nice to e-mail the grandparents recent photos of their grandchildren playing in the pool?

I wouldn't mind having access to the Internet. Having the ability to relax at night on the main deck in a lawn chair surfing the net and chatting with friends in the middle of the ocean. That kicks ass!

Neither are the computer or the phone, but it is good to turn those damn things off and get away from them for a short time.

The article is talking about Business meetings on the cruise is becoming more common. So, this move is towards satisfying that market segment. Businessmen need to be connected. Also, given the high charges associated with Wi-Fi usage, not many people will choose to do this. Bandwidth on the cruise is very expensive.

You forget that there are a lot of CREW that live on these things for months at a time. My Bro-In-Law is one of them. Being the Naval Architect of the ship he is on I am sure he will appreciate this info.

Well...

Some people have responsibilities that are more important than enjoying that one sunset. Seriously!

Then you need to get with it along with those people and DON'T go on a cruise! Why are you on a cruise if you need something more "important" to do? There are more important things to do than enjoy the little vacation time most of us get? Sorry buddy!

That's where I give the big finger to Corporate America. Get the "F" out of my life when I'm not in the office.

We are all slaves again. Even when we are in the middle of the ocean or driving down I-80 you get a call/e-mail and your boss makes you do work. Screw that.

Slaves don't get to go on a cruise, or drive...

Pretty uppity for a "slave"
Why don't you just call "Corporate America" hitler and be done.
Oh wait...they're the ones actually making the cruise possible...and the car...and your cushy job

Then they shouldn't be on a cruise pretending that they are more important than other people. Those are the same types of people that are so important that they feel the need to talk on their cell phone during a movie. The same important people that don't feel that they should have to stop for a red light or cut in at the last second of an off ramp causing everyone else to slow down.

If you are on a cruise, you should be relaxing. If you can't relax on a cruise, you shouldn't be on it.

Re: Well...

Well, with the internet, you can send pictures back to your families and friends instantly. And you can communicate with your children who are being taken cared of by a cat instantly also.

Re: Well...

Taking pictures and sending them to your family would not fall into the "I'm important and important stuff to do" category.

But, even then, you can show them to your family when you get back. They will understand, because they know you are on vacation and are enjoying your time away.

i see it both ways

I'm mixed on this...

One one hand, I agree Turn it off....

.....but......

...you have to also keep in mind, that a cruise is not a little jaunt to Vegas where you have ready access to phones and email and such if need be, most are at least 3-5 days (some even longer). In my business, I can just imagine what would happen if I was not able to handle certain things that might come up for a week..

Just being able to login, check the dailies, keep up on the schedule etc. would be nice...

Silly

What a silly idea. They already have to wire the rooms for electricity, so they ought to just wire the rooms with CAT5 and broadcast wifi onto the easy common areas, like the pool and the decks. If some guy insists on wifi in his closet-sized room, rent him out a wireless router to connect to the ethernet port in his room.

My two cents worth...

My wife and I recently took a cruise on Royal Caribbean, and while Internet access was available, we didn't use it. It cost 50 cents a minute and I heard from a dinner table mate that it was very slow. While it is probably nice to email pictures from the ship, it was nice to get away from the office for a week. Besides, I would rather snorkel with stingrays than surf the web.:)

Having the wireless access for free is probably a good thing. Using the Internet computers required the use of your "Sea Pass" cruise credit card, and the balance on ours at the end of the cruise was large enough without any charges for Internet access.:o

You guy are making this sound like a bad idea. Don't like it? Don't use it. Want to use it anyways? Use it. But it always help to know that it's there when emergencies show up.

why not??

Open up those narrow minds...

Recently I was on a Lufthansa flight using Boeing's Connexion doing wifi on a 747-400 over Europe and into the Atlantic...it worked great until about mid ocean when it stopped... too bad cause after all the movies one needs some stimulation for an 11hr flight...lol
- I called Boeing after the flight and they credited me for the entire flight's internet charges... I'm happy...and would use the service again
BTW, there were 6 routers onboard to handle the expected traffic (1 first class, 2 business class and 3 in coach)...

Recently I was on the Grand Princess for a trans-Atlantic voyange of 16 days from Galveston Texas to Rome Italy... I used both the ship's internet connected pcs and their wifi services... again after so many days at sea the internet was a stimulating diversion (one can get too relaxed floating along eating and drinking, etc. onboard).... some thoughts:
- for nearly 2 days the ship's internet service was down due to antenna problems and a software upgrade... what surprised me was how irate some older passengers became because they couldn't contact their families....go figure...
- with so many passengers using the internet they could have used 20 more pc's... as is they had approx 20 of which only 15 or so were working at any time
- the wifi service was very limited to public areas around the central atrium but that atrium also had a live string quartet playing continuously and a bar closeby...

Who could complain... just imagine after 10 days on a ship that the internet might be a nice thing 2 have available...
