Friend of mine works for Claria/Gator and from my understanding the company was looking to get out of the adware business. (At least according to him.)
I think it's more likely that MS is buying patent rights and isn't intending to use the technology for some insidious purpose. Of course, they may. Who knows? I guess time will tell. -- -Kinsey
