One might add that, at least on Cox, users seeing a relible 15mbps connection are few and far between. |

When the 500ms latency and 80% evening slowdowns are gone. While they certainly should provide the service to areas that have the infrastructure to handle as I mentioned in another thread I wish Comcrap would give equal attention to those areas like mine that are plagued with constant problems. |

what is it with the last century uploads? I would happily remain at my current d/l speed (4M) for double the upload (or more) of the current 384K for that tier.
Besides 4M,5M,6M, all sorta the same ballpark. Next jump I wanna take is to 10M or 15M (can you hear me now?). |

| This much speed is unrealistic
Faster speeds are fine, but unless cable ISP's have drastically changed their networks, it seems like they will head into congestion problems like they had 5 years ago.
Allowing a smaller and smaller number of users to saturate the bandwidth in a given area seems counter productive. I'm seeing that just with 5mbps, there are only a limited number of Internet related things that will deliver that much bandwidth consistantly. Why will giving users 2 and 3 times as much speed be any better: 1) to me? 2) to the network? -- ] :: my trivial ramblings :: [ |

so does this mean if i already have the gold tier, it will be increased to 8Mbs/768, but then there will also be another tier that i can upgrade to for an additional fee?.. please tell me that isnt so... i think i pay enough as it is now.. |

said by fegul :x2, I can't wait to see this one I hope it is true. But it will have little impact on browsing speeds. May allow large downloads of MS software fixes to run a little quicker.
What is needed is faster upload speeds, not faster download speeds. -- My Web Page Join Red Room Forum |

1 edit | DSL
Talk America will soon be offering DSL in my area. They are asking $24.95 for 4000/384 service (assuming you are close enough to the CO). For those who don't know, Talk America is an alternative local telephone company (CLEC). Unlike most CLEC's they are actually facilities based as opposed to reselling SBC service through UNE-P. I ported my number over to them several years ago.
I called them and they told me I am on an older system and will be transitioned to the new system on July 29th so I should call back about a week later. They will then run a line test to see if I can get DSL. If so I will most likely switch. Comcast is charging $45.95 per month including modem rental. Even if I only get half the rated speed it's still worth the price savings.
Comcast is going to be forced to cut their prices and not just offer faster speeds in order to retain customers. They may not want to cut prices but will have no choice if DSL keeps undercutting them.
One other thing I've noticed is that more and more spam is slipping through the Brightmail filters. Hopefully with a new e-mail address that doesn't end in @comcast.net I will get less spam if I switch providers. |

just a 384 upload? How stingy. A 512 or 768 would have been nice. Sending a 300MB file to the office is not fun. |

| reply to jagged you know..using cable there is a top end upload speed... and if theres a lot of folks on your node all at the high end speeds, then things kind of STOP.
I'm just waiting for FIOS to become available.... |

Come on RoadRunner. 6000/512 would be nice here in Rochester, NY area. From inside sources...Frontier DSL is having a silent roll out in this area to 6000 kb/sec speed and is prepared to go as high as 10 mb/sec speed eventually. Competition is good in this area for sure. Frontier DSL still available for $29.95/month for 2 years. |

Evey time speed upgrades are mentioned someone complains about the upload (come to think of it, I think it's you who complain about the upload). You aren't going to get it because upload increases are relatively expensive, and for the most part no one will notice except for the P2P crowd, which no ISP really wants to deal with anyway. -- Beagles really should come in convienent 10 packs. |

Until Comcast migrate everyone's upstream modulation to QAM-16 instead of the current QPSK, they are going to be severely limited on upstream bandwidth.
I have a suspicion that a lot of the downstream packet loss that people are seeing is actually due to upstream congestion which causes the acknowledge packets to be lost. This seems worse on older modems. I guess they have less buffer for upstream packets and therefore timeout quicker. |

It's not clear if they'll match Cox and Adelphia's respective 15 & 16Mbps tiers (in competitive markets).
Yeah, this is a cable company, how many competitive markets are there exactly?:) |
