...running the Internet!!! What a friggin' disaster that would be. Maybe we could trade oil-for-Net access or some other scheme to defraud users and the entire World. Or maybe France could veto all Net use because they didn't get the Olympics.
The LAST THING anyone with a CLUE should want is the USELESS NATIONS to be involved in ANYTHING. Those losers should be DISBANDED !!! |

Let them create their own '2nd Internet'. Since we control the root servers, we'll just block their '2nd Internet' at root level! |

At this point it is just a regional internet network. Nothing to get too excited about.
Though, I do applaud them for not simply crying about it and actually DOING something.
If their network gains momentum and is able to convince enough people to join and shows that it is a better system, then more power to them. Currently, the internet as it stands is a global network. Theirs is not.
The good thing is that this will show how democratic the internet really is, regardless of who controls the root servers. The more accepted network will succeed. The loser will fade into a regional network.
Currently, the U.S. based network has momentum. Whether it is better is up to interpretation. -- Note : The statements made by myself are my own and not the opinions of my employer or of my coworkers. 15.81 GHz Crunching Power | The Ryan Foundation for MPS Children |

There have been some SciFi written about things like this. It turns into another Iron/Bamboo curtain where those on one side get one story, and those on the other side get another story (North Korea and South Korea come to mind). Some interesting politics arise from that, including wars agreed upon by rulers on both sides where each side knows the 'facts' and defend against the 'aggressions' of the other side, even though nothing really happened except on the 'net'.
Wish I could remember which books those stories were in. -- I am not lost, I find myself every time. |

When their net is ready let the world know. I actually dont think its a bad idea to implement regional root server management. Let each country/nation manage their own root servers, and set up forward records in all the other root servers.
That way everyone is happy. |

And just WTF does the war in Iraq or gas prices have to do with this topic? Riiight...
OP has a point, as a forum to discuss new internation treaties and such the UN is irreplacable. As an actual governing body of pretty much damn near anything its proven itself over and over again to be pretty bad and every bit as corrupt as any other gov.
The US has so far done a pretty damn good job of managing the root servers and has gone out of its way not to censor anything on them or play any stupid politcal games with em'. I don't think the same could be said if the UN got control of em' as many countries in the UN have voted time and again on similar issues that they DON'T like the internet in its current form and want to be able to block things they deem inappropriate entirely... |

This is a good thing. This will get us to IPv6 much faster. I am sure this network will not be built around IPv4. Well, if they do it, we will have to do it to, right? From a national security view point. One would think most countries would want their own root servers. Most probably do anyway.... for backup. So is all this about selling domain names?
I really doubt Turkey is pushing this alone. I'll bet they were recruited to do so. Well, like others said...the more the better. Let em roll out IPv6. This should spur a new round of hardware sales and kick start the economy. -- Thermaltake 2000a/Asus P4C-e/p4 3.4/ocz3500 2x512/WD.2x200g/raptor2x74 raid 0/ATI 9600/APC sua 1500/Logitech z-680/ Samsung 213t LCD/MX 1000 |

| reply to getafrigiinclueNOW It is sad, but not unexpected. The ITU has been around longer then the UN. And they don't do a bad job, just pick a phone up and call another country, the fact that it works is because of them. They just got lumped in with the UN. Also before you go whining about the UN doing nothing go ask a few million people alive thanks to them deliving food. -- 4 More years and we won't have a country. |

You are probably thinking of "1984" by George Orwell, but there were three countries involved, and two of them were always plotting against the third one. But which two it was changed every few years. I think the author (who was British) intended them to be Britain, Russia and China. But the control of the press allowed the rulers to change the alignment overnight without the people complaining, or even knowing they were being duped. Whatever our problems today, lack of information is not one of them. It is more the lack of processing power in the recipients. |
