Regulation Lowers Prices

The only competitive arrangement is for those fortunate enough to have Time Warner Cable. Thanks to government regulation during the initial AOL Time Warner merger, Earthlink and other ISPs were permitted to provide services across TW cable lines.

For those, as described in this article, who don't subscribe to cable TV, these competing carriers provide a MUCH better deal (often as much as $19 less per month) than the cable companies (in this case Time Warner) do.

I just wish there were some more regulation to reign in the Bells' voracious appetites as they continue to drive DSL CLECs out of existence.

I'm not a telco junkie -- if I've got some or all of this wrong I'm sure one of you folks will stop by to correct me!

Price war

This person doesn't know what he's talking about. Of course there is a price war going on. The DSL providers are slashing their prices not only as a promotional item but their regular prices are now lower than cable.

Comcast will be forced by the competitive pressure to cut their rates or else people will leave in droves for lower priced DSL. Not everyone wants or needs 8Mb speeds. I could live with 2Mb if it cuts my bill in half.

There WILL be price cuts on the cable side and I believe it will be sooner rather than later.

Hmmmm

Price war....hmmm it seems simple when you add the cost of the regular phone service into the equation that DSL cost the same as cable. I support users and I would rather have a cable modem on the other end of the phone than a DSL connection. Cable is quick efficient and cost effective for the remote work force.

And where were these price cuts the last five years? The next five will be the same. Not until FIOS moves into the neighborhood will cable companies lower their prices.

The only one attempting this is Qwest, with stand alone dsl.

Cable companies don't lower prices. Ever.

When was the last time someone mentioned that their cable bill had gone down for the same services, even WITH the endless moaning and scare tactics about (and real lost revenue due to) satellite TV competition?

-- B

P.S. Although, come to think of it, satellite TV bills never go down either. They just don't rise as readily as Bob Dole.

Competition and the lowst price of the season:

I'd rather see FULL deployment and support of current technology rather than a price war. The cable industry is under assault by the telcos who WILL get video capability and will HAVE to share the cable marketshare that they currently enjoy. For now, corporate scanals at both adelphia (cableco) and mci (telco) have forced indutry consolidation enough to satiate the lack of any future consolidation. But there will most probably be some sort of consolidation of the 'cablecos' as we currently know them because telcos will be gaining significant marketshare inroads for years to come. The first $'s of which is about to begin and accelerate (legislation pending).
The cable companies are in a price war with themselves, actually.. introductory deals, triple play deals, and whole lot of hoopla speding truckloads of money trying to maintain marketshare... all the while telcos are licking their chops at the potential customer gains to be made in VIDEO... If the telcos are smart they won't be bogged down by duplicating services already offered, but make some new content offerings that make cable look like an old style drive-in movie (but with $6 gas prices).

Re: Well.....

I, on the other hand, would prefer slower speeds (not dial-up mind you, but not 8mbps+ either) for less money. I would love to be able to pay $25 a month for a 3mbps plan instead of $45 for 5mbps. I can think of plenty of things that I would spend the extra $20 a month on. (Or maybe I would even just stick the extra cash into my savings account for a rainy day.)

Keep raising the prices out of reach of common man.

I've got to know, what services do you think that the telcos will deploy in the near to mid future that will make Cable's on-going roll-out of VOD, HD, DVR video services "look like an old style drive-in movie"?

Only if your in range of the local Telco CO. Most of us in Comcast land only have 1 choice for broadband.

Re: Competition and the lowst price of the season:

I disagree. The cable companies will eventually realise how easy it is to deploy FTTH on their networks. They already have massive amounts of bandwidth over Coax. Once this happens, the telcos will be destroyed.

Re: Price war

The problem with DSL is 75% of the people can not get it. I have to pay $60.95 a month for Comcrap because SBC can not provide DSL in my area. Until DSL is available to everyone you won't see a price war. Comcrap knows they got you and won't lower prices.

Re: Hmmmm

Quick and efficient is dependent upon more than just the speed.

You have to allow for latency, routing, and backbone load. If you think 8mb vs. 3mb is the only arguement, then you are a fool.
