That sucks!

The men and women fighting for our freedom deserve more than that! Why does it take 3 hops? Cant they just use one hop and at least eliminate most of the latency?

Ahhh, I see. How is it that sat phones work there then? I would imagine that if they had to make multiple hops the latency would kill the voice transmission.

Re: That sucks!

you're going to have latency no matter what kinda satellite phone you have. It's shooting the damn signal hundreds if not thousands of miles into space.

At work, we were experimenting with a few sat phones one day and there was probably about a 1.5-2 second delay and we were right next to each other.

Though, that's 22300 if you drop a perpendicular line from the satellite to the equator. It's further if you're anyplace but the point at which that perpendicular line intersects the Earth's surface (don't ask me for the formula to determine the distance to an arbitrary point within the "footprint" of a given satellite). Further, even if you are placing a call between two ground stations serviced by a single satellite, the round trip is going to be a minimum of 44,600 miles (assuming both end-points are essentially right next to each other and at the base of the satellite/Earth perpendicular).

When you start to need to communicate across significant enough distances, you have to take multiple hops.
The multiple hops can be done in a couple ways: either by bouncing directly from one satellite to another satellite or bouncing up and down from the satellites to earth-based repeater stations. Either way, you've got quite a few miles to deal with. It might be easier to try to simplify by deriving the miles between communication end-points (ignoring switching overhead, etc.): 186,000Mi./s * lag. So, even if you had a 2 second lag, that's still less than a half-million mile point to point distance. You'd need at least a 5.4 second lag to be in the million mile transmit distance range.

I had a friend who was stationed at the Baghdad airport about a year ago. He would call me on a sat phone he bought over in Iraq, and it was really really weird, since he would usually call me on my cell phone. I would say something, and it would take almost 3 to 4 seconds to hear back. He's home now, and all our friends have Nextels, so it's a little harder to get coverage

Havent you ever watched a reporter use one? There is a huge lag between the anchorperson in NY asking a question and the reporter even hearing it, let alone responding.

I noticed this during some recent storm news coverage from Florida too.

I took a call from someone in the navy on a boat over in the mediterranian, it was a good five to eight second delay. Especially bad because they didn't wait for me to respond to anything, they just kept talking and talking.

Satellite telephones don't use geostationary satellites at 22,300 miles over the equator. They use a constellation of low orbit satellites less than 500 miles up. Lag from that distabce is not noticeable in a phone conversation.

I happen to be a conservative. Problem with you is you are so far out on the extreme right-wing fringe that everyone appears to be left of your precarious position.

As for the alleged terrorists in BUSHenwald - er ah - the Gitmo death camp, my answer is yes. As un-american as it may seem to fascist right-wing extremists, I still believe that ALL MEN are created EQUAL and endowed by their Creator with certain UNALIENABLE RIGHTS. Is there something about the words ALL MEN and UNALIENABLE RIGHTS that you don't understand?

You obviously haven't been listening to the military. Just a few days ago, the officer in charge of prosecuting the detainees at Gitmo came out and said that the prisoners they had down there were really non-entities, with no significance in terms of international terrorism, and there was little to no evidence that most of them had done anything. Made his job very difficult, even under the marginally legal rules used for military tribunals.

What you guys fail to understand is this: Bush is about as successful at fighting terrorism as he is at fixing the economy, privatizing Social Security, or getting Bolton confirmed by the Senate. The reason that there haven't been more attacks isn't because the government is so brilliant at stopping them, it's because the threat was overhyped in the first place. Do you really think that if they can't stop drugs and illegal immigrants from coming across the border, they can stop terrorists or explosives? Months before 9/11, Bin Laden personally bragged that he had 40 men willing to die for his cause. Just 40. 19 of those were killed on 9/11. The rest were likely killed during the US invasion of Afghanistan. If we'd stayed there, and actually bothered to capture Bin Laden rather than start gearing up to invade Iraq, it would all have been over three years ago. The new attacks in western Europe have been carried out by extremists forged by the Iraq War and the hatred it has inspired. It would never have happened without Iraq.

Thankful? I'm sure those F'ers would rather we blindfold them and cut their heads off with a knife. It would be much more humane than to abuse them like we do...and frankly, what does that say about us as Americans? We call the terrorists evil, soul-less, cruel, and cold-hearted, but it takes a human being who possesses all of the same qualities to abuse another human being in the same manner...So in essence, we are no better than the enemy that we fight.

A few isolated cases of abuse don't equate into trying to knock down buildings and set off bombs in public wayfares.

And really, you think psychological terror is no worse than getting your head chopped off? I think the families of the journalists, the aid workers, and the contractors would disagree.

Man, what is this country coming to when people take no pride in it.

Wireless Major

@adelphia.net

Re: That sucks!

Those few isolated cases of abuse weren't few. They were just the ones we heard about. By making that comment, you are trying to justify abusing those prisoners, which makes us as Americans no better than those who would seek to destroy out country.

I take plenty pride in my country, as only one without pride would seek to condone, or try to make excuses for the abuse at Gitmo.

If you re-read what I say, then you would see that I believe that psychological terror is worse than getting your head chopped off. Would you rather someone psychologically terrorised you for an extended period of time, or just chopped your head off.

And those few cases of abuse weren't few, they just were the ones we heard about through the media, and the media just told the tip of the iceberg of the story.

Yes, what is this country coming to when people would as soon as lower themselves to treat others in the exact same manner that we would condemn another nation for.

I think few would agree that we have lowered ourselves to their level.

I'm sure I'll get hate mail on this, but isn't it strange how it's only a certain type of people that are responsible for a majority of terror attacks?

I know I'm going to get pounced on for saying this but here goes... all the men and women fighting for our nation deserve is a gun that works, lots of ammo and our unconditional support.

They are fighting a war, not taking a vacation.

They don't need beer, bottled water, cigarettes, and they certainly don't need broadband.

Have we really become so vain that our soldiers demand all the comforts of home when in a war zone? It's a war...not tea with grandma.

Instead of worrying about eliminating latency, something that probably can't be done, they should find a way to miitigate it by using something like proxy servers....

Of course, they ARE several thousand miles away from the mainland of the US... Physics and such would dictate latency. The fact is, considering where they are and the conditions they are under, the should be happy they even have the internet. Personally, if I was there, I would be happy just to be able to check my email and wouldn't worry about the latency. Low latency connections are a luxury.

Hmm..

Haven't you ever noticed when watching TV news and the local anchor pitches to the correspondent in London or wherever overseas there is always a couple seconds of lag until they begin speaking? Same thing. I actually have to explain this to some people who work with me in TV sometimes because they don't get it. That voice has to travel through a lot of wire before it comes out the other end.

That voice has to travel through a lot of wire and air before it comes out the other end.

Why?

I can understand this soldiers frustration, but I can't help but think that this is trivial. The troops over there are paid to do a job, not surf cnn.com. Where I work, internet access is given on a needs based basis... I don't see why the military should be any different.

Stupid

What a jackass, whining about cnn loading slowly while talking about something actually important like whether or not wireless devices for soldiers are working well.

There is nothing that can be done about the latency of satellites except for local web page caching or land lines.
"technology needs to improve." Some of the dumbest people are CEOs, I wonder how many hours he spent memorizing the definition of stochastic.

Do it yourself

That's how it is with DOD, it takes them forever to do anything. I won't even dream about having 56k there.

I was thinking about getting a dish and maybe getting some satellite net for myself, maybe from like Australia.
All we really need is wiring and dedicated satellite, which of course we will never get.

Internet in Iraq

I am in Iraq, and although some one said this before I will say it again, the connection mentioned is for VIPs in the green zone. the every day private gets to pay 15 cents a min plus 2 dollars for connection if they want to call and let there loved ones one they are ok.

its not about having all the conforts, hell I live in a trailer with more holes than walls. But i like to let my 8 year old daughter know that despite all the people that are getting killed in Iraq dad is still alive.

if you think that is too much ask thats ok, but dont ask me as a soldier to help you when the building you work at gets domolished by some extremist because he doesnt agree with your point of view.

Good to know that the people on the ground are having to shell out their own money while the guys tucked away in the Green Zone have the luxury of broadband access without having to shell out their own money...

Not cool...

I've worked in Iraq setting up satellite Internet data and voice communications for the company I work for. The hardware we use costs $8,000 plus a monthly subscription of $1,500. Its less than a day to set up, an antenna with a diameter of 1.2 metres, a modem and a router. For that we get 1Mbps down and 256Kbps up, with a theoretical contention ratio of 12:1. Minimum latency is about 650 milli seconds, that's solely due to the distance from the ground to the geostationary satellite. We maintain IPSec VPN tunnels to the corporate office no problem and often connect remotely to the sites in Iraq to help out with any problems.

We also control the way the satellite links are used, some are dedicated for business and have quite strict controls. Others are for welfare use and we're much more relaxed about how the guys use these.

As a company its much easier to do all this than for the military, we've trained and educated the guys on the ground and they've learnt that abusing the systems affects everybody.

In summary there are ways and means, it just needs the will. The military from whichever country, deserve, need and should have the means to relax, unwind and communicate with their loved ones back home. Just because they didn't have it in previous wars or conflicts is not a valid reason not to have it now. Where do you want to stop, Agincourt where the English beat the French (again) in 1415?

These guys and girls are doing a fantastic job in tremendously difficult conditions, they have earned our respect and support, whether or not the war itself was right or wrong.

Re: Bush's prodigy?

I don't think those men are dying for any ideals, just for a stupid president who could care less about them, sometimes, soldiers just die in vain, if you think all wars are some big glory fest, and they are all fighting for high ideals, you are mistaken. I support our soldiers (my dad was in the Air Force for a long time, oh, he's dead against this war by the way, a lot of my family served in the armed forces, from Vietnam back to the revolutionary war),I DO NOT support the war. If he loves our boys so much, BRING THEM HOME and out of the mess!!! Blindly follow our leaders, that's fine, but being American means we have the RIGHT to question and disagree, and THAT is what make us American. We the people, that includes us all, not just those who "fit" the status quo at the time. I wonder, did you get on people for criticizing President Clinton or the Democrats? I bet not.

I think that's terrible to call me, or anyone who disagrees with you a Nazi, do you do that to everyone? I didn't know dissent was unamerican, hmm, I guess that would have made our patriots in the revolutionary war a bunch of traitorous scoundrels, how dare they question the authority of the King!

If you want to criticize my views, fine, but don't insult me, it's rude, disrespectful and and on top of that, it's agains the TOS.

STFU and take your meds already. The topic is about the lag in Baghdad, you take opportunity to add nothing useful about the the topic. Go shave that crooked rat tail off your chin and pray to become something useful someday.

That Lag Sucks in Bagdad

Has anyone there considered a proxy cache server? That would certainly fix the lag time for CNN.COM. There are technical solutions that can improve the performance when accessing commonly viewed websites. It helps!
