There are Indeed Concerns, but Article is Biased

While I do believe that there are some legitimate privacy concerns related to Google, it also seems that part one of the articles referenced to in this story is biased, and heavily at that. For example, the article states "In addition, Google reads users' private e-mail sent through its Gmail service and private e-mail stored on users' hard drives through its desktop-search software." In my opinion, the statement that "Google reads..." implies that the text is more than merely search electronically for keywords, but that it is actually comprehended, which is not the case. Furthermore, it seems to imply that Google is somehow aware of the emails you have stored on your computer. Google's software is, but Google sure isn't, at least not to the extent of GMail - the emails Google indexes on your hard drive are never sent back to or analyzed by Google. In a sense, Google's email indexing is about as much of a threat to your privacy as your email program's spell checker. It may make it easier for people with access to your computer to see private emails, but Google never sees any of it.

All and all, and interesting read, and I do agree that Google poses some threat to privacy, but as of late, barking about Google's threat seems to be more of the "in" thing to do, and this article can be tossed into that pile, IMHO.

waaaa!

Oh pissed, that I beat you all out, what did you want a Shakespearian speech................ok

St. Crispen's Day Speech
Shakespeare's HENRY V
C. 1599

Enter the KING

WESTMORELAND. O that we now had here
But one ten thousand of those men in England
That do no work to-day!

KING. What's he that wishes so?
My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin;
If we are mark'd to die, we are enow
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honour.
God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.
By Jove, I am not covetous for gold,
Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost;
It yearns me not if men my garments wear;
Such outward things dwell not in my desires.
But if it be a sin to covet honour,
I am the most offending soul alive.
No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England.
God's peace! I would not lose so great an honour
As one man more methinks would share from me
For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made,
And crowns for convoy put into his purse;
We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is call'd the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian.'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispian's day.'
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

Zeroing in on Google is so myopic. Everyone's ISP, thru use of network sniffing tools, can see everything you do on the internet that is not encrypted. Face it. Everything you do online(except encrypted info)is out there to be seen and captured if someone wants to go thru the trouble. But who wants to go to the trouble, unless you are some important personage or a target of the FBI, NSA, CIA, homeland security, etc.

Anyone who bothers to trace my unencrypted info will be bored to death.

No problems with Gmail

All I know is that I get plenty of junk mail from my MSN account and zero from Gmail. Go figure. I agree with the other poster. It seems like every company that makes it big becomes a target.

You Had Me at "Professor"

As soon as I see the words "professor", or "law professor" I brace myself for what, invariably, will be an ultra-liberal point of view, with a questionable connection to the real world.

Why do you think ABC, the AP, etc. always go to college professors (and specifically law professors) for their takes on the issues of the day? And it's so hard to argue with it, because in a vacuum their points sound so good. However, in the real world, it's another story entirely.

What I think people fail to realize that, by its nature, in the academic world, professors and academics lose a certain level of awareness with the real world. Yet at the same time, safe in this insular, idyllic environment, they feel free to comment on how the world should be, what companies are doing wrong, what the President is doing wrong, etc. Never mind the fact that they couldn't be nearly as accomplished in the real world (but people who ARE successful in the real world can, and often do, cross over into the world of academia.) (Well, either that, or they are just happy that someone came out on TV and said something they agree with.)

Granted, academia has its own caste structure and fiefdoms and pressures, and some people will thrive in it better than others. But it really gets my goat when people sit in an ivory tower, high above it all, and comment and attack, criticize and nit-pick when they have no clue how things really work in the arena.

i trust them

I don't know why. They have a pretty logo.

I use google for email, all my web searches, a web portal, and even have search history turned on (so there is a record of everything I've searched for since it was enabled). They can track whatever they want.
