When I first read the article summary, I got the impression that this company only employed two people for all of their operations. |

This is too small a company to rely on for phone, video, & internet access with too small a staff to fix things when something big goes wrong - like cable cuts, server farm meltdown, etc. If you are an adventurous sort - maybe they are for you? -- My Web Page Join Red Room Forum |

Thats probably about 500 customers Max.. in a neighboorhood the size of a peanut.
I'd probably use them if it was available. -- Saya anak malaysia |

| Small, yes - BUT...
Rich,
They are small. But you do have to start somewhere. Also, since they are serving (A) residential accounts in (B) areas that the LEC and cable company have stated that it is cost ineffective to upgrade the networks servicing these same areas - then the people that live in those areas really have no choice. If they want the advanced services - then it would seem Urban Telephone is the only option at the moment.
Also - their VoIP system is through Vonage. They are only Private branding the Vonage service with their name.
While the operation may be small, and only time will tell what happens to them - I like the approach that they have taken with building out their OWN network and not leasing parts of it from Verizon. Verizon can not complain about yet another CLEC using it's network, and Urban Telephone can not complain that Verizon's wholesale rates affect their business plan.
I remember a lot of people on the forum when the new FCC rules came out about regulation of the LEC applauding stating that why should a CLEC be allowed to make a profit of of someone else's property. Well - here is one company that can not be accused of that - and the free market will sort it out in the long run.
For what it is worth I hope the best for them, at least these guys found their niche market, and are serving people that otherwise would not be. |

Let the scumbags at Verizon continue to redline. Plus, their stupid FiOS doesn't even support multiple dwellings anyway. If this "Urban Telephone and Video" company is successful maybe more will follow. Using for Vonage for VoIP? Sounds like a good sign already. |

Yeah, because Verizon's "we'll take 5 days to repair your 'business grade' T1" is so damn awesome. If only someone could emulate the VZ customer service and repair methodology, it would be utopia. |

| In response to the above post - that is a little strange not to have a contact number on the site. Perhaps they only deal with the management of the MDU's that they service? Still it is a little strange not to have a number to contact.
As for FIOS running to apartments - that is great. I think the whole thing about this company is that they are willing to bring these advanced services to people that Verizon and Comcast (sorry - not sure who NY uses for cable) are not willing to bring the service to. FIOS is great for the people that Verizon is willing to invest in the network upgrades for. Digital cable is great for those that can get it. I think that this whole idea about this company is that they are willing to bring these services to people that the BIG companies are stating are economically not viable.
Perhaps this small company will show the Verizon's and Comcasts in this country that perhaps it is economically viable? Perhaps not. Either way - I hope that this company is able to stay afloat and prove their business model. If they do, then perhaps there will be more choices for all of us. Choices can never be a bad thing for any of us. |

New York City has Cablevision, Timewarner, and RCN (cometimes the latter 2 compete). No Comcast around here. |
