It looks like Dell has chosen to add the EVDO feature to their line of mid-priced mobile laptops that would be used by traveling businessmen. And that is a good fit for this class of customers. And EVDO( »www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/mobi···view.jsp ) is a good fit for mobile businessmen looking to keep in touch with the home office.
The Latitude series of laptops was a good choice to try this out:

I thought the laptop makers would begin doing this. It's probably a good idea. I wonder if Cingular Wireless will come out with somthing similar soon. |

Having used the GPRS and EDGE a bit on my company dime, I would say it is not worth it, unless your company is paying for it and you _realy_ need it. It is just cheaper to stop by Panera, McDonalds, or numerous other places that give you free WiFi. Buy a cup of coffee and get your wireless data fix taken care of too.
Even if you pay $60 per month for data, the taxes and fees will put you above $80. No need to elaborate where $80 ends up.
Now if they did it for say $30 or $40 without a need for a voice plan, I would definitely say it is worth a try. |

I have both the sprint card and the verizon card, in phoenix az. I have to say, both are really good in phoenix. I get between 700-900k almost anywhere on both cards. I have been al over in phoenix their are some dry spots but for the most part they both work good. I would love to have it so I didn't have to carry the cards around...
by the way 80 dollars a month to go anywhere; in your car, at the pool, at the bar watching foot ball. I gladdly pay. Some pay 40-50 and are stuck at home. I'll pay the extra dollars for everywhere in the city, and what do they have now, 30 cities. |

I've never quite understood the market for this service. Maybe 5-6 years ago it could've really taken off. But now, with so many hotel rooms offering free wi-fi who needs it?
Do you really need to be connected "all the time?" I had thought about looking into it. Our company offered it for a little while, but has gone away. We just stay in hotels that offer free wireless. If not, we don't stay there. |

Well I've had my Dell for almost four years and never had a problem. I know where I used to work they were the company standard and we loved them compared to the IBM's we replaced. Sound like you may have had a bad experience but I'll recommend Dell any day! |

I have four Dell desktops in my home, and my daughter's on her second Dell laptop. I also recommended them to clients when I did some consulting back in the day. Never have had a minute's trouble. Only *issue* I ever had was my old P90 died about two years ago when the power supply went down. Then again, P90's were circa what? 1995 or so?

| I've only had one Dell and it's been pretty pathetic. It's a laptop and it's so hot just idling. I got it like nine months ago and the hard drive already crapped out on me. And when I did put a new hard drive in I had to use another computer to get the drivers so that my laptop would even function. If I could build my own laptop I would. At least when my homebuilt computers have a problem, which is like once in a couple years I only have myself to kick in the ass for it. Needless to say, I won't be buying another Dell again.

You need to recognize the very slim margins that vendors are operating on for their sales. It's a cut-throat business that you can verify for yourself by pricing what you can buy at the same price the Dell is offering for laptops, or desktops, for that matter.
Any company that will pay a few dollars for access to a company's line of computers is welcome. For Dell, the Verizon EVDO access will cost the customer a few dollars at purchase, but might gain Dell more than a few dollars at the sale; with the thin margins, anything that has credence and brings in a few dollars is worth the effort for Dell. Who knows, Dell might make a few dollars more from the long-term use of Verizon EVDO than they make from a naked sale of the same equipment.

GM is the biggest car maker in the world. Yet most think they suck.
Wal-Mart is the largest retailer. Yet they suck the most. Many won't shop there (I know I won't anymore)...
I've been doing this for quite a long time now. Long enough to remember when Dell was just another POS box maker out there along the lines of AST, Packard Bell, Northgate, etc. Only thing that has changed is most of those went out of business. Dell still makes a POS machine, always has, always will.
And don't forget, most PC buyers DON'T choose Dell. They only have around 25% of the market. That means 75% don't choose them.
And let's not forget their slipping customer service and reliability scores.
Let's not even discuss how they cheap out with 90 day warranties where most of the industry is at least 1 year.
Want me to go on?

Sorry, I'm not 10 - I could care less about your POS computer beating my computer. I need reliability and that's why I never reccomend or use Dell.

Hello? Look at benches - most Dells do in the middle or bottom of the pack. So, it's probably easy to beat that bench. But I could care less - I stopped using PC's a long time ago. I get paid to hobble Windows together and make it run reasonably well. I sure as heck don't trust my stuff to that POS either. |

Yup. They are all bad. I do this stuff for a living and Dell is by far the least reliable out of the bunch. And the least performing as well. |
