It's a good idea

At least it's the best idea for mainstream music. There are several other services available that work for indie bands/artists as well such as Independent Music Online »www.ind-music.com

Pretty good idea from the minds of the guys who run ISPs. At least it seems someone is thinking outside the box.

hmmm...

i wonder how long the content will stay inside the "walled garden" before some intelligent person "bounces" the content outside of it.

My question is...

what then if someone within their network desires to look for music that is otherwise *not* mainstream?

Or more importantly, what if the artist in question isn't signed by any of the members of RIAA? That would make this ideology fairly null and void, wouldn't it?

According to the article, audible magic could block all transmission that go outside the walled garden, as well as transmissions inside the walled garden of works that they do not have royalty agreements for.

How Much?

If their single prices are anything to go by, .99 to 3.96 pounds, I doubt there will be much interest. No matter how great the concept the cost will determine how well accepted it will be.

My understanding is that they have deals with just about all the uk indie players. It isn't like it is just sony. Sony was a big deal because it is the first major player to be willing to participate.

Exactly. I haven't read the details yet but say Com(mie)cast or BellSouth let you pay $10/mo extra for the "Music Tier" that lets you swap your brains out with others on the music tier as well. Then for internet, they allow outbound :8080 and keep the p2p stuff from being transmitted. I think that has potential.

you're linking to the wrong site. That link is for the playlouder.com download store. This ISP service is completely different to that. Look at www.playlouderMSP.com . Once you have paid your monthly broadband subscription all the music is "free".
