BBR Headline potpourri...

In other news, Sony DRM has being linked to Verizon FIOS delays, Xbox 360° shortages, and the success of SBC IPTV.

Google has also announced plans to use Sony DRM to release Firefox v1.6 via WiMax in Lafayette via the iMesh p2p program through the new Google DVR.

So how long will it be...

...before WoW releases an anti-drm root kit, only to be countered by Sony releasing an anti-anti-drm rootkit.

Here's an idea to manufacturers. Leave your #$%* crap off MY machines. Your doing nothing to encourage people NOT to steal your content and constant reminders/encouragement to steal it to avoid crap like this.

Where did you read that? I can not find it on the web. The Root kit issues yes, but not what you are touting.

Here's the instructions...

Stright from the forum linked in the SecurityFocus article:

1] Buy the [Sony DRM] CD
2] Run the CD
3] rename myhack.exe to $sys$myhack.exe

Done. It works better then the FU rootkit
...

Way to go Sony! Now we can hide files just by adding $sys$ to the file name. Poof, they're gone... or are they?

What A-holes.

Why would anybody cheat at WoW?

That is pretty lame.

Why does anyone cheat in any online game? Because they lack the skills to play.

No, because it's fun to do and it's hilarious watching the people who are too stupid to figure out how to cheat get angry at us

Although I appreciate your humour (good sarcasm is always fun to read), the reason this is in the news is the goober from the company that created the rootkit insisted in an interview yesterday that nobody was exploiting this and it was no big deal.

I find it deliciously ironic that it is being used to hide files from another piece of privacy invading software that people want/need to play a game.

Re: Why would anybody cheat at WoW?

I dont think they want to use cheats, considering a 12 year old could pull that off, they just think that you are a dumbass thinking you can do something they cant, while ruining the game.

DMCA Violation Root Kit

Considering that this tool is being used to bypass a legal protection (blizzard), Sony should be sued under the DMCA by the attorney generals. I mean, if the **AA's can sue people for bypassing copy protection, then I sure as hell want to the the government turn on the big corporation for the same violation.

From the DMCA text : Under Section 1201.(a) VIOLATIONS REGARDING CIRCUMVENTION OF TECHNOLOGICAL MEASURES- (1)(A) No person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title., and subsection (3) As used in this subsection-- `(A) to `circumvent a technological measure' means to descramble a scrambled work, to decrypt an encrypted work, or otherwise to avoid, bypass, remove, deactivate, or impair a technological measure, without the authority of the copyright owner.

Now, the sony DRM is blatantly used to violate the Blizzard protection mechanism. Granted, the original purpose of the device was not to bypass Blizzard, but the law is blind to that fact. The fact of the matter is that people are ACTIVELY SEEKING it out for the SOLE PURPOSE of bypassing blizzards protection.

Now, in the REAL WORLD, the attorney general of the US would sue sony, and seek the maximum pentalties for the corporation AND THE OFFICERS of the company. If the MPAA can sue a grandpa for 600,000.00, then by my count, the number of downloads of the DRM package has far exceeded 10,000, but that's a nice round number to prosecute with. So, 500,000.00 for the first penalty, and 9 billion, 990 million penalty for the subsquent downloads. And all the executives go to the big house. Remember, the only reason the **AA's go for the huge penalties is to make it a deterrence. If they can sue for more than the net worth of a person, please explain why a corporation shouldn't be sued for 500% of it's value. Only the shareholders loose, but hey, they invested in a shady company like sony, and knew the risk they were taking.

How sweet would that be?

Re: wow!

Microsoft Needs to do something about this stat. No process should be allowed to run on the same level as the OS NONE at least not stealth. Or maybe their are things that go bump in the OS that MS doesnt want people knowing about. What if in addition to the OS MS got Programs that report stuff to them.

Re: DMCA Violation Root Kit

Gee, I wonder if this means that when I plug my PS3 in to my home network, that it is going to scan my network for for sony files?

Or maybe this is sony's stab trying to take down WOW.. and getting people to move from WOW to EQ2.
