Comments on news posted 2005-12-05 11:47:40: If you recall, when SBC (now AT&T) was fighting a community fiber project in Illinois, an SBC exec went before a city council and proclaimed that fiber was unproven, troubled technology (see film), and customers didn't need that kind of speed anyway .. ..

Video phones

Anyone remember the movie Total Recall? I thought having the option of video phones everywhere was cool. Of course you could turn off the video function and just have audio. But there. There's your answer to why EVERYONE might need all the bandwidth. A worldwide videophone network, with phones that aren't hundreds of dollars.

Here's another interesting thing. I remember seeing AT&T commercials in the early 90's about people being able to go up to a public computer and find out where things are at in the city. And I recall a little girl talking to her dad on a video phone.

"It's coming from AT&T"... Sure...

I think once people start incorporating more broadband into every single part of their lives, not just thinking broadband is for TV and computer downloads, maybe then we'll see the bandwidth come. I dunno. heh... It'd be nice to be able to listen to iTunes radio stations in your car via wireless. Anyone remember Richochet?
