Comments on news posted 2005-12-08 09:24:25: Apparently half of all HDTV owners don't actually use the HD capabilities of their set, and nearly a quarter think they're watching high definition video when they actually haven't set it up correctly. ..

Maybe if there was some HD content?

Right now 99% of comcast cable channels are SD.

I try to watch the HD channels when ever I can, but most of the time there is just nothing on.

90% of what i watch is in HD and a majority of that is from the big 4. Now if only FX went HD. Maybe the new Fox HD channel coming in 2006 will carry FX shows.

Not surprising

It doesn't surprise me that 50% of people that purchased an HD set didn't RTFM.

I definately see the need for Home Technology professionals continuing to grow.

Most of primetime is HDTV

I'm not surprised that 50% don't use HD though.

Statistics lie.

Hey for me, I will stick with my 45" RCA rear projection and watch non HD. Unfortunately, I would say that most people on the Gulf Coast and down in South Florida will be using their savings (like me) to fix the roof over their heads before they even think of watching any type of HD programming.

Has anyone ever read "How To Lie Using Statistics?" It really is a fascinating book.

some people easy to please, I guess

"The survey confirms the long-standing prejudice of many of us non-videophiles that HDTV really isn’t all that impressive."

Anyone that thinks that HD is not that impressive has not really seen HDTV. Maybe if the retailers were showing true HD on the floor samples (I don't know, maybe they are), when people got the sets home and it doesn't look like it did at the store, they would try to figure out why.

Unfortunately, the probably do what I have seen reports of some people doing: buy the HDTV cause it looks great in the store, then when they get it home and don't have the programming, they take the TV back because it doesn't look that good.

Doh....

Well.... with at total of say, 10 HD channels... what would you expect...

Its best to buy a cablecard ready hd set.. it works for me... hd channels are clear and obvious.

Heh...

My dad has a Sony 50" Plasma, and I was at his house last weekend and he was watching college football on ESPN -- regular SD ESPN.. They showed a replay and the "ESPN HD" logo flashed across the screen... so I turned to channel 202, and sure enough... the game was on in Hi-Def on ESPN-HD. He was probably remarking to himself how great the SD picture was .

Happy with my set, want more HD

I just got a new 50" last month and love it. I have DirecTV and their HD package. However, I found out that even though they have the major networks national broadcasts available, they don't activate them if you have locally owned affiliates (I guess that's the right way to say it). The way it's setup with whatever restrictions they have I have to get an antenna or have DirecTV request a waiver on my behalf to the local stations to allow me to receive DirecTV's broadcast of the national channels vs. the local ones.

I used to see commercials about DirecTV launching satellites made for HD but haven't heard any more about it now that I have an HD set... anybody have any details?

In summary, my TV kicks much ass. After watching the few HD channels I have, SD sucks .

funny

The bar I frequent has a big sign out front "Watch Football on our High Def TV". The owner has a SD DirectTV box with coax running to the TV. I keep telling him it's not HD, but he doesn't believe me. Most of the people watching love it though. They all crowd around the big TV watching the short, fat, stretched out football players.

Re: Happy with my set, want more HD

The satellite was launched about a month ago, uses MPEG4 Technology. Hopefully you did not spring for the HD DVR because it will need to be replaced to use the new bird.

Rumor has it the top 16 markets will go online soon, the bird has a capability to do 1500 HD channels. Most D* customers will need a new receiver and dish to use it

Personally I think OTA HD is the bomb, just sucks I can't Tivo it! (YET!)

Cox HD looks nothing like the OTA signal I can get anyway.

Haha! I've seen the same thing at the bar of a restaurant I go to. They have 2 Panasonic plasmas behind the bar with some nice stretch SD signal. I hear the "wow look at that HDTV!" comment many times. I gave up long ago trying to explain it all to everyone.

Computer keyboards are very sensitive. You do not need to apply a lot of pressure. Banging the keys only serves to wear out your keyboard and you.

I still haven't taken the HD plunge, but I do have DirecTV. If I were to upgrade now, I'd assume it would support this new capability, yes?

I'd hope so. I wouldn't to upgrade to something that is obsolete.

HD works for me

When you see the snowflakes falling on a field of grass where you can see individual blades, you know you are seeing something different. When the delivery guy steps in while you are watching an HD channel and becomes transfixed you know it is something different. When you watch a DVD and say, "Damn that is just not clear as it should be" you know what capabilities you have.

I love watching HDTV, sure the DVR set top costs a bit more but it is worth it to me. I just wish my cable company would update the firmware in the box and give me archive capabilities and I would really be happy. For my part, next I need to beef up the cheap Home Theater system I thought would be adequate.

Re: Happy with my set, want more HD

I'm sorry I don't remember the model numbers, I do know the current DVR models will NOT work.

There is a HDTV Tuner, I think it has 82 in the model number that is MPEG4 compatible, I think it's the one they are selling now.

I am buying a HDTV Tivo this weekend regardless, they say even if you buy the older model they will upgrade it for you when the time comes.

The current Tivo records HDTV OTA, and that's 90% of what I want anyway.

This isnt HD?

Doesn't surprise me.

A "big" tv is so new to us that it seems enough.

When I flip on INHD or Discovery HD, that when my friends go, "Ohhhhhh......"

And watching my pitiful little 480p DVD's now makes me dizzy and want to barf. I can't wait for blu-ray!

HD lacking programming

That sounds about right. I just wish DirecTV would get off their butt and get some more channels in HD. Hell I get more channels over air than I get from them. Once people learn how to set up HD then there will be a rush on outside antennas. I agree that right now that the available HD programming is pretty dismal.
