Buy them out now to offer TV, then kill them off when they start offering their IPTV or migrate customers who can get it to IPTV and offer Echostar to those who can't.
Makes perfect sense. |

2 edits | While remotely possible, this deal seems unlikely at best. Still, some think talk of a merger is a bit premature. Thomas , an analyst with Oppenheimer & Co., said he doesn't think a deal is likely anytime soon. Instead, he thinks AT&T may take a wait-and-see approach.
"Why would AT&T want to buy EchoStar when they already have the alliance now?" he said. "Strategically, I don't see motivation for doing it. The company is too far along on its own rollout."
There's also the issue of whether or not AT&T should be taking on another deal so soon. The SBC/AT&T merger just closed in December. -- -- Join Red Room Forum My Web Page |

Even cable use's sat to feed tv to their markets. This could very well be a move that would help AT&T deliver their IPTV system to their markets and then use fiber or whatever to feed it to the customer's home with IP from there. |

| NO THANKS! AT&T just go away!
I have no interest in AT&T services and taking over Echostar/Dish Network would NOT be a good thing.
I don't want "double/triple play" packaging, and at&t/sbc doesn't serve my area as an ILEC so its of no benefit.
I don't see this as a benefit to either company, and most certrainly not to existing Dish customers. --

said by Gilitar : My predictions for 2006: Verizon buys Alltel
This IS the DEAL announcement I've been waiting for, for years. Their wireless divisions are pretty chummy as it is now, and this would make sense in wireless, but one thing I see a problem, Alltel's ILEC areas.
VZ is trying to shed "rural" ILEC translation UNPROFITABLE areas. So if they bought out Alltel these people would probably get sold down the river again. --

I see more of an investment coming from this. They invest in echostar and then use it to deliver most of the content to the home. Using iptv to deliver only the vod.

| Ma Bell Returns
After Ma Bell was broken up in 86, Looks like Ma Bell is going to return to its thrown, slowly but surely. It may take a few more years but Ma Bell well be back. By 2010 it will be Ma Bell vs Comcast vs Satelite(if still around). We will have more compitation between either sat., cable, or telephone. So it will not be just 1 dominating company. I dont think the FCC will break up Ma Bell again with cable and satelite as compitation.;) |

I agree and think they should keep the Verizon name as it now has national brand recognition. But my choice for a new name would be:
Mseeskyzon - kind of an eclectic blend of both companies and cultures...what? You think it sucks and is bogus? It doesn't suck any less than the name Verizon....:p -- »voipboards.net |

The FCC did not break up "Ma Bell". The Department of Justice initiated it via an anti-trust suit based mostly on monopolistic practices involving it's Western Electric subsidiary. You may not remember but at the time, AT&T was the largest corporation on the planet, and employed more people than any other entity save the US Government.
AT&T broke itself up to settle the anti-trust suit and avoid what could have been a never-ending prosecution, via a consent decree.
The conditions which allowed "Ma Bell" to rise to power no longer exist, and never will again. What you have now are budding telecommunications media companies vying with each other for bigger slices of a pie not yet baked. The sparring will continue for awhile, but I predict no more than four companies will walk away from the counter with the pastry.
And it's "throne", not "thrown". -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |
