| Series 3 has lots of good features
The cable card capability means it can be used with almost all cable company systems.
The SATA capability means lots of storage for HD recording.
And the multiple tuners allows high flexibility for combining OTA and cable or sat connections.
If it doesn't cost an arm and a leg, I think Tivo may actually have a winner here. It may be a product that can keep them from going bankrupt.:D -- -- Join Red Room Forum My Web Page |

| It's the DRM that makes or breaks it
Will it record to DVD? Will it obey the copyright bit? Will it record HDTV shows?
Tivo doesn't have the best record for privacy or consumer rights. Hopefully, Tivo will realize that signing a pact with the devil (directv/comcast/etc) is the same as signing a pact with microsoft, and in the end they will get steamrolled. Having said that, should Tivo make the Gen 3 'consumer friendly', they can expect to be sued out of existence ala ReplayTV. Not sure how they can win either way. -- Sure the internet has lots of porn and piracy, but I'm sure there's a downside to it. |

You are confused. Cable cards are not PC cards. CableCARD is a PCMCIA Type II card (like the cards you put into laptops for network or wireless access) that serves as an interface between third party tuners and the cable company.
Ask the PC tunner card manucafturers when they are goin to make a Cablecard compatable digital cable tunner card for a PC. -- Start a man a fire and he will be warm for one night. Start a man on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life. |

| Aww nuts...
My siblings and I JUST purchased a Tivo Series 2 for my folks... The dual cable tuners would have come in handy since they have digital cable and the digital converter boxes make it difficult to watch one thing and record another if both programs are on digital channels. |

Oh there is a huge upside to this. If the Tivo3 can be modded like a xbox then it will be a hit. They can put protection in it and lock it down, but if some clever person hacks it and creates some sort of modchip, then it will take off. To me the xbox is so hot because of the ability to really make it do what YOU want it to do.Tivo3 + modchip(i.e. record HD from sat/cable, real time encoder = major sales and serious profit. I would definitely buy one then. |

I'm in love.
The only question I have is will Series 2 and Series 3 units communicate with one another.
Series 1 and Series 2 do not ....

Maybe you and all the other techies but not the average joe like myself. I'm not at all interested in tinkering with my digital equipment for fear of screwing it up and my warranty in the process.
And im guessing that the vast majority of TiVo subscribers just want a box that works and is not too restrictive. |

If it's been less than 30 days you can send it back no questions asked. However, you will be waiting far longer than 30 days for this "series 3" box to appear on store shelves. It if was ready to go it would have been out there for the end-of-year-madness shopping season. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

1 edit | So what...
...TiVo execs are a bunch of spamming whores. Like Adaware...I'm NEVER going back no matter what they release. All of my series 2 units were spammed endlessly (until I cancelled anyway) and new DRM rules (wouldn't let me keep Family Guy until I delete) lame. I've had TiVos since the first Xmas they were released and back then the service was great. You bought the box, paid $10/mo for guide updates...no spam...perfection in technology.
Then they raise the monthly fee 30% and you would think with such a large increase they could go without banner ad spam, spam while FFWDing, the pulsating thumb ads and system message spam (yes I would get "official" system messages about new Sheryl Crow albums). That would all be well and good if guide updates were free, but for nearly $160 plus the cost of the hardware (plus I paid HMOx2 when they used to charge for it) you would think they could provide a spam free service. My HD DirecTiVo sees no such spam and if it ever does, it will be gone too.
Now I've seen some here claim they've never seen this spam...to them I say consider yourselves very lucky. -- WAR HAS NEVER SOLVED ANYTHING, except ending slavery, facism, communism, Nazism.... |
