Google can pay for repairs...

when providers making the billions give them a cut of the revenues.

Wahhhh! I got money in BellSouth and Verizon. I'll be dumping my stocks first thing when the market opens! Are these guys retarded ,or will drug testing be required for bellsouth and Verizon upper management?

Context

Any chance of the poster [however that works] posting the WSJ article here? [er, as much as possible without BBR liability - friggen sue happy country].

I really don't understand how so many people are replying to this article with such fervor of disgust having only two partial sentences as a foundation, am I the only one that doesn't pay for this online news service?

Pretty well slights many BBR readers to post news citing a source that requires cost.

We now return you to the regularly scheduled thread.

Google should buy BellSouth

Then they could fire all the idiots that come up with this nonsense.

Does Google use that much bandwidth? No.

Does Google and Gmail save the Dumb-Bells money? Yes.
Less money for email and less money on their own (ISPs) websites.

If the Bells get what they want, it is censorship and the FCC, by law, can't allow such censorship to happen. The 1st Ammendment says so:

-Freedom of Speech
-Freedom of Religion
-Freedom of the Press

The U.S. Supreme Court has already ruled once, at least, that the Internet CAN'T be censored EVEN if it protects the common good.

This would do exactly what China is doing: censorship.

BellSouth should tell how much money they really are spending on repairs. I doubt they don't budget for it and/or have insurance for it as well.

The Dumb-Bells are just ticked Google is worth more than they are and are extremely profitable.

I have a thought: remove Verizon, BellSouth, SBC (AT&T) links from their websearch. Just allow people to find all the hateful posts against each, nothing else.

itscrazy

@adelphia.net

It's nuts.

Verizon is bitching about bandwidth hogs, now BellSouth is bitching because "Google didn't pay to restore service?"

First of all, ANY COMPANY that uses wires to provide service to businesses and home, risk the possibility that those lines will go down at some point. Be it for a car crash, to an old wiring job, to storms. That is part of doing business and cost to repair service SHOULD be included in budgets. I live in the North East, storms take down lines all the time in the winter especially. But do the Electric Companies and Cable, and Phone companies go after third parties to pay for the damage? Hell no. If they did, it would be a PR disaster. Granted the Hurricanes have done far more damage then anyone could imagine, but to say Google should help pay for repairs? Jesus, I have an idea??? Why not tell Google they need to help pay for all the damaged homes? Thing about it, no homes, no one using the internet, thus no one using Google, thus no one using BellSouth....
I tell you, the greed for money in the nation is going to be our countries undoing in more ways then just the internet.
We're going down so you better get your life jackets.

If there is a Truth in Advertising Law

Then Bellsouth needs to immediately change its name from Bellsouth to Bullshit.

Google should place an ad in the main search page warning customers of Bellshit, why they will soon lose access to Google.List every reason why and quote that horses azz word for word in its ads.IF BS wants to talk the talk,Google should walk the walk and put BS,Verizon,SBC..etc in their place.

Ayup that is what I would do *IF* i was google,I'd embarrass these greedy SOB'S with an ad on Googles site running 24/7.I'd make sure these spineless weasels have some "splaining" to do to its customers on why they are banned from google.

Bellsouth: Google should help pay Katrina costs

Some new neighborhoods have mailbox clusters every 10 houses or so. I think when I mail a letter to one of those houses, I shouldn't have to pay full price for a stamp.

Are you plugging Bellsouth, or are you in need of a Valium or 13?

Stocks rise because shares are being bought - that's economy. Yep, investors, a fishy lot they are.

"....All of which WE, yes WE have to pay...." --- what, did Google send you a viewing bill or something? How the hell did you pay for it? You only pay if you buy.

Simple solution, don't go there, it's quite simple.

GO TO BED !!!!!!!!!!!

Bell South / Federal Relief

as Far as I Know is not the Fed. giving large sums of money to company's that where affected by the Hurricanes to replace losses of Property and Earnings!
And as such it sounds like bell South is trying to get Paid Two or three times for the same repairs! JMHO

Then vs Now

BellSouth (or South Central Bell as it was known in the late 60s and early 70s) used their cost plus agreement to wire the area south and west of the NO airport. 1000s of homes and businesses went up in only a few years.

SCB laid cable at several million $ per mile to wire this area for phase 1. Every few months as more homes and businesses were built, they spent more millions for phase 2, 3, etc as well as upgrades to the Kenner and Laplace COs.

After a few years (and reportedly over $100 million) it was finally discovered that a large area of houses and businesses really needed their own CO and spent millions more on building one.

Sound like lots of wasted dollars? Sorry folks, the rate structure was cost plus so instead of their rates based of 10 million (or so) for doing it right, they got it based on 100 million instead.

Jump to today’s post Katrina world. Rate structures are different, and competition exists in reality (if it existed at all in that earlier time). I’m also sure and it will cost a bundle to rebuild and rewire. There is two ways that BS (BellSouth) can handle this. Get busy working on modernizing and rebuilding their system or fuss, fight, and complain about how they can’t possibly afford to rebuild.

If they choose the first method (like the electric, cable, water, sewer, and gas companies), God bless them and NO and BS will be better off. If spread their BS (don’t mean BellSouth with this one) about how it can’t be done, the solution is simple, pull their exclusive franchise and allow SBC (AT&T or whatever they call themselves today), Verizon, or some other company that can handle the job to jump in there and get busy.

There’s money to be made with the population density that high, especially if you can jump in and rebuild the communications infrastructure while the streets are already being torn up for the rebuilding of the other utilities. If you wait too long whining, you’re on your own and costs will rise exponentially.

The Fault was in 1984

I agree the 1984 breakup/deregulation of MaBell was needed. Given 20/20 hindsight, why, dear God why, did they split things the way they did? especially with the hamstringing of the resulting AT&T long distance.

Ideally (in my mind) they should have broken MaBell this way:
1) 1 unit Physical Plant (i.e. the wires, switching, COs, etc) and heavily regulated (possibly gov't subsidized) to allow universal access)
2) 1 unit for Long Distance - with regulation to make it conform to the same conditions of startups (a.k.a. no preferential treatment from #1)
3) RBOCs with the same condition of #2
4) Hardware unit regulated only to operate like startups (i.e. given same info/specs/codes for making stuff)
5) Bell Labs - the toughest nut - start with, maintaining their historical funding and funding increases - spread that amount amongst the 4 units appropriately (of course a recurrent lawsuit) Allow others to contract them for research. AND NEVER ditch "basic research" they have the history of making being funded by the above.

my message to bell: quit your incessant bitching.

"google should pay for line repairs, google should pay for priority".

the only thing google should do is buy your company and send the ceo's back to the entry level positions.

no one cares about you and if you keep going down this road, no one will know who you are in 50 years.

Die BellSouth

BellSouth needs to go under like all the other companies run by scumbags (read: MCI and Enron). 'Nuff said.

I can see it now

Attempting to access Google from a BellSouth IP the page displays:
"You are attempting to access Google from a BellSouth account. They have chosen to charge you extra for that privilege. Please contact BellSouth Customer Support to make arrangements to access Google sites."

Then the rotary oscillator will be working overtime!

PS: It appears that the narcotic of outside funding is catching up with BellSouth management. Maybe the straw will be released from their death grip now. On second thought, nah.
