Wasted efforts by an ISP...

It's a terrible waste of blockage when you got 65k ports to manage.

Re: Wasted efforts by an ISP...

They are blocking certain packets not ports.

I think.

I'm sure someone that knows what he/she is talking about will respond shortly.

I vote Ports.

If you can change the port and speed increases this is likely the cause.

However i don't know what traffic shaping devices they have. It could be packet inspection but that would/should not allow you to change the port and gain performance improvements.

no ISP should block any service!

why the hell does it matter what people use their internet connections for?
I don't see ISP's blocking FTP, I can always go at the upload speed I'm suppose to get, yet more and more ISP's want to mention how awesome there speeds are, while blocking or throttleing many of the reasons folks want to take advantage of said speeds. I see no difference between seeding a torrent or offering an FTP server that gets alot of use. Fortunately my ISP doesn't throttle any services, which is the way it should be, but if they ever did, I would show them that they won't stop me from using my upstream connection. I'll gladly if it came down to it set up an anonymous FTP server and say Ha take that! We pay for an internet connection, so let each user use it as they wish! Internet connections are not just one way receive only lines anymore! So we want to seed the latest episode of Systm or other torrent, big deal I say, if I'm paying for a given speed, that shouldn't be for only web and FTP, it should be that speed for whatever services we the customer wish to use now or in the future!

what's worse is rogers has a 100gb cap. i don't know why they borthered setting it up. they don't enforce it (thankfully) but if they ever intended to they wouldn't have put packet shaping hardware in. you get 100gb, you should be able to use it any way you want, at whatever speed level you pay for.

rogers is like any large corporation though. it takes them a long time to get on the bandwagon and it takes them an even longer time to realize when to get off.

Encryption is the ONLY way

As I've so often stated, you can't trust the megacorps, you can't trust the government. The end all solution is end to end encryption. They CANNOT filter that, or throttle that, since they can't see whats going through the traffic. As long as ALL traffic is encrypted at the end points, they won't have any options. Even web traffic should be encrypted and tunneled, to prevent dumbass moves like rogers.

Re: Wasted efforts by an ISP...

Its all the same logical progression. When people find out the orts they are filtering they will go out and buy one of those deep packet inspection boxes that checks sessions for the obvious BITTORRENT protocol header in plain text and only throttle those sessions. They are trying to do it for cheap right now. We all need to impliment on the fly ipsec to stop these stupid ISPs from filtering our traffic based on content and restore true end to end connectivity without middle man interference.

Default policy of deny all, then add in rules to allow specific ports/services. Fairly efficient.

BT for me..

If I was a rogers client, I'd be on the phone every 20 mins complaining about the shi*ty service..

Has anyone affected by this actually compalined (formally) to them?

You purchase a connection the internet, if they're blocking some services and/or usages, then you SHOULD also be entitled to a lowered bill.

Re: Encryption is the ONLY way

Everything that makes this crowd PAY for what they use is a conspiracy. I bet if you offered their kind a FREE movie a day they would all say, "Is that all? It's a conspiracy! I pay for UNLIMITED bandwidth."

Other examples:

When Murdoch bought DirecTV and cracked down on the illegal card schemes THEY RUINED MY LIFE!!!

iTunes raised their prices! RIAA sucks!

I can no longer steal Blockbuster movies. Conspiracy!

Verizon cancelled my account after I downloaded 30 gigs of illegal music! Verizon sucks!

I use Vonage and e911 doesn't work! The Bells are all behind it! It's a conspiracy!

Re: BT for me..

What would you say to them on the phone?

"Hello, I'm unable to illegally download copyrighted material via BT using your service"

I know there are legitimate uses for it, but I wouldn't be surprised if 99% of BT traffic is illegal. No wonder they're blocking it.

Definitely Port Blocking

I was trying to get a file for a while, and to no avail... 2kbs max... 15kbs for 20 min IF I was lucky.... today I tinkered with ports 1755... magically I get 200+kbs... thinking its a fluke I tinker to 162... down again to 2kbs... back to 1755 again speeds.. the file is well seeded, with low user usage(not too popualr... like 35 seeds.... 3 peers lol)... so :P

Re: Wasted efforts by an ISP...

If voip uses similiar packets then it would explain why only the voip port works. But I really don't know what I'm talking about so I'll just shutup now.

so many different programs use such a wide number of ports I'd think it would be pretty tough to just block em all.

Re: Encryption is the ONLY way

They aren't always in the wrong I mean there is alot of lobbying going on, but it's not all a conspiracy. I mean in respect to the iTunes thing the RIAA does suck. I think its a serious exageration what you posted. It should read
iTunes raised their prices! Government sucks!

I can no longer steal Blockbuster movies. Government Conspiracy!

Verizon cancelled my account after I downloaded 30 gigs of illegal music! Government sucks!

I use Vonage and e911 doesn't work! The Bells are all behind it! It's a Government Conspiracy!

Goverment is trying to give me free or cheap broadband. Government sucks!
