It just keeps getting better and better.

The price just keeps going down, and that is a good thing. I love SBC DSL and the price just got better for all those new subscribers. Wish I could take advantage of the new pricing, but oh well. I got on the $16.95 price plan for 6 months back about a month ago.

full speed

I wish sbc/at&t would give you the full speed like Ameritech used to. With pppoe and overhead you dont get close to the advertised speeds. They should do like comcast and up the sync rate so you get the full advertised speed.

wow...

I wonder why they have to keep dropping the price?

Dropper

yes, but too many abused on the distribution of dsl make it like filling your gas tank (hard drive in this case) with an eye dropper. Unless you like looking at web pages all day, and downloading enough mp3s to fit on a cd-r instead of a 60gb ipod.

Just a thought. I think G4Techtv should do a parody of the crappy deployments we see in both the cable and telco industry today...
You know where they can stick the $2 drop... that should be the installation charge for internet-2 fiber!! :->

Its the technology unfortunately. DSL has limited range so they depend upon consumers in a 2.5 mile area. The technology is getting better and a lot of areas are having RTs deployed, but my area doesn't have one and it doesn't look good for me down the road so far.

You got that right. DSL is a joke unless you live close to the CO. I'm certainly not in the boonies but according to the phone company my line is 22000 feet away and therefore I can't get it.

Fortunately for me Comcast is available and works well. I would like to save money and would settle for slower speeds in exchange for a lower monthly fee but unfortunately since DSL isn't available to me I don't have that choice. I can't complain about Comcast though. The speeds are fast and getting faster. Yeah I pay a lot but I'm also getting a lot for my money.

Eh, its probably due to Verizon

They dropped the rate to be competitive. Verizon has been selling DSL for 14.95 for some time now. Its nothing new. The only difference is what company is selling. Granted the speed for 14.95 is garbage for anyone higher than a new user. I would not attempt to download much of anything on a 768 connection, which is Verizon's 14.95 plan.

I'm still using my 3.0Mb from Sprint, which is expensive, but I checked with the cable company to compare and they want me to spend 29.99 to activate the cable line for tv. The only way I would get cable internet is if I had cable to so that I'm getting my monies worth. But their bundle for regular basic cable would cost 42.95 a month. Keep in mind this only includes channels 1-64 or 65. That is every channel under digital. Now. Compare that to have Satellite tv and paying roughly the same price of 39.99 and you get many many more channels for the same price. Granted it is on a separate bill and I'd be keeping the DSL line, but you still get more for what you pay. Not only that, cable companies don't want their customers running any sort of server on their system. DSL is dedicated and encourages you to run servers.

 Not such a great deal

The new price is good for six months; when the offer expires, customers would be charged whatever rate is in effect at that time. The $14.99 deal is for the "express" level of service, which allows connection speeds of up to 1.5 megabits per second. AT&T's $14.99-a-month deal is only for customers who ... have AT&T local phone service.
It only lasts for 6 months and you have to have AT&T local phone service as well. It isn't that good of an offer.

DSL 1.5MBs = the new dialup

With faster DSL and Cable service, going to 1.5MBs just seems so slow now.

I was considering going back to $20 a month 1.5 DSL to save $20 a month from Comcast's $42.95 6 Meg Cable. I just can't do it. Lol.

Why the price drop again...

The price is the only way dsl can compete with cable.
Without FTTH, at&t must rely on price alone to compete.
I have SBC DSL and like it very much, but don't see a real bright long-term future for it.

What are you talking about? eye dropped?

My house has 3mbit DSL and my college apartment has 5mbit cable.

True, the cable is twice as fast (DSL sync'd at 2.65mbit), but overall it only equals about 5 minutes of download time. So I have to wait 15 minutes instead of 10 minutes for that 350MB file I am...big deal.

I would still take the slower DSL over the cable.

1. The price
2. The upload speed.
3. The stability.

My cable enjoys dying once a week and I get higher gaming pings.

Re: Why the price drop again...

Cable 6mb is quite useless if ya just surfing or downloading pretty slow 50-100kb/sec on p2p. BS charges 24.95 for 256/128, 34.95 for 1.5/256
Neither offer any great value for the budget consumer.

Cable/DSL is so area dependent. Broadband as a whole should be compared on its pros and cons, I agree to that. However, just because cable may be bad in some areas doesn't mean cable sucks as a whole. Not that I am saying you said that, just pointing it out.

Cable in my area was totally awesome and incredibly fast. The only con was the price. DSL used to really suck in my area about 5 years ago. When I first subscribed to DSL, I was nervous. Today, 2 years later, I am happy and have no plans to move away from them.

It lasts only for 6 months, but you can resign for a low rate after the 6 months.

You have to have AT&T local phone to get DSL. You have to have Comcast cable TV to get cable internet (or pay more for your cable internet all on its own). You have to have local phone service to get just about any DSL and cable TV to get cable internet or at least a lower price on your cable internet. Most cable providers jack the price up if you don't have cable tv.

Isn't that good of an offer? How about you let your wallet decide if that extra speed is worth the extra $25-$30 a month. DSL is rock solid in my area, and worth it.

Re: Why the price drop again...

As someone already stated, it's not a great deal since you're required to have local phone service with AT&T. I don't have land line, I use my cell phone, so that means $14.95 contract for 6 months and also $15/month for the cheapest AT&T local phone service that I won't be using.

When AT&T offers naked DSL service than it might be a deal worth looking into.

Compared to the previous 12-month on-line deal, it's a price increase going forward for the next 6-months and beyond.

crying detected

$89 a month and climbing for my cable tv with high speed, but that's what I have available... I am glad to have any broadband since Pacbell/SBC/AT&T will be deploying new hardware in my area sometime between 2026 and 3006. Nice deal for those who can get it...enjoy!
