1 edit | That would be a huge Wimax rollout; if true
If the unnamed analyst really has some legitimate info, this would be a huge Wimax implementation and has the potential to shake up the whole wireless landscape, including WiFi, 3G, etc. And, of course, if this actually rolls out, it could be a formidable competitor to the telcos and cable companies. Especially because of Murdoch's deep pockets and ability to eat costs for a few years.

I would wonder how much time planning has been spent by executives at News Corp. who see this as an opportunity to get "the message" out? |

I would wonder how much time planning has been spent by executives at News Corp. who see this as an opportunity to get "the message" out? Probably little or no time at all. This venture into broadband is all about protecting their income streams as triple play marketing by their competitors threatens their profits. Remember, corporations are 1st and foremost about making money for the stockholders. Everything else is secondary. -- -- Join Red Room Forum My Web Page |

@comcast.net | He's going to stick DTV customers with the bill
Rupert's going to finance this venture with Directv price increases. Someone already announced the rate hikes in the satellite forum. It ;ooks like $5 bucks a head which should leave oodles of cash for deployments! |

Now, I'm not much on corporate bigwigs such as Rupert.....but I'll have to give him props on something like this. Heck, if it weren't for DTV many of us out there wouldn't even have a chance of getting more than 3-4 channels on the ol tube. So, I'll wish him best of luck! |

2 edits | reply to TKJunkMail I find that highly unlikely considering News Corp's message is pro-industry, pro-capitalism, and serves stockholders. Granted it's probably a tertiary concern behind pure profit and creating a triple play for DirecTV, but I'd bet a limb that creating a marketing and political voice to aim at broadband users is a significant part of the planning. (pollution is minimal, soda and fast food isn't that bad for your kid, Your HMO loves you, etc.) |

Murdock is a world player. He sees the entire chess board not just the part that pertains to the US. His has enormous stakes in Europe,Australia and China. He might be getting some press in US now since News Corp moved from Australia to New York but he has been a big shark for a long time. Any CEO that discounts what Murdock can accomplish better just look at number of companies under his control and be scared. Really scared.

Directv (and dishnetwork) for that matter have been very slow at raising costs, and that is related to higher network fees (Viacom). He hasn't, or it hasn't appeared that he has charged DirecTV viewers for Direcway.
The bottom line is I hope this succeeds. Keep my cable modem bill low. |

Bullshit. He's playing on the cheapest fearmongering in order to get more money. He's one of the most disgusting oligarchs - he really don't give a shitabout free speech or democracy. |

| reply to Karl Bode Links to Rupert or News Corp saying such things would be helpful before accusing them of such.
Odd.. he's a very big liberal and a Democrapic Party contributor, so I fail to see how he can be accused of a conservative viewpoint.
As it pertains to Fox News and the New York Post (among others), he may be a liberal but he knows what sells. Obviously, he's going to let them go their own way in terms of viewpoint since it's worked so well thus far.

He's not a "very big liberal", he's an opportunist. and Re-read what I wrote. I didn't say Conservative message, I said pro-industry. |

| reply to schenoweth Separate Fox News/NYPost from News Corp./Rupert Murdoch in the same manner that you would separate Ted Turner/Turner Broadcasting from CNN.

D* prices are going up 3/1/06, but for existing subscribers it's a $3/month increase but if you have the HD package, which is going down $1, net result is a $2/month increase. Whether the price increase is to fund this venture is open for debate with no proof other than a price increase. And which cable or satellite provider hasn't raised or announced price increases for 2006? |

I'll take Rupert using PRIVATE CAPITAL to deploy NEW COMPETITIVE INFRASTRUCTURE over GOVERNMENT REGULATION and the COURTS limiting competition to protect the INCUMBENTS any day.
I cast my vote for the deployment of disruptive technologies that keep everyone on their toes and promote a competitive marketplace.
I want to be able to honestly ask the following question, "Cable, Telco, Wireless, etc. I wonder who has the best deal today?"
Fox News found a successful niche in the 24 hours news-n-babble market, get over it, it's good business. -- "If PCs are hard, then Macs are flaccid" -bb |
