This deal will certainly encourage churn...

The only problem with this plan is that its going to encourage customer turnover. If the intro pricing lasts the whole length of the contract and customers can leave after the contract expires, there is no reason for them to stay and continue paying the higher price. Intro pricing schemes usually make sure that the customer is locked in so that they end up having to pay the higher rate at some point so that company can recoup the difference of the intro pricing.

This is SBC pounding on Comcast now that they are on the mat. Comcast customers - keep in mind that once they absorb or destroy comcast over the next 4 years, what do you think SBC will do with their dsl rates when their is no competition. SBC already eliminated the local isp's so they have the corner on dsl.

I for one will never go from cable to dsl again. Cable way out performs dsl.

To be even fooling yourself into thinking there might a .000001% chance of that happening you must be delusional.

There's a better chance of me winning the mega-millions every time I play.

Are They Making Any Money?

I wonder what the shareholders are saying about this? Isn't AT&T a for-profit company? This seems really desperate.

How is this any different than competitor's DSL?

Okay, lower cost.

AT&T's still forced to rely on your local telco's copper, which means we're still limited by our local LEC's rules (distance from CO, etc. etc.).

At least here in Silicon Valley, our LEC has zero interest in running new copper for shorter loop lengths to the COs. Those of us >9000 feet from the CO (due to those loop lengths) still can't get faster speeds.

Unless AT&T is planning on re-laying copper and making actual topology changes, I can't see them being successful with this (minus the fact that they're inexpensive).

How many stay when intro price over?

The key is what is the retention rate for those who took the intro price when it jumps up to the regular service rate? I am sure AT&T has marketing studies done that will tell them what the retention rate will be. I'd bet it is more than enough to make this profitable for AT&T.

How do you figure Comcast is on the mat? You didn't believe that ridiculous headline »Comcast Profit Plunges 69% today did you? Read this before jumping to the idea Comcast had a bad 4th qtr:

Re: Where?

They don't start taking web-orders untill Friday it says so of course there won't be anything yet on there website.

I might actually have to take the plunge for 12 months into this strange new high speed revolution. I am still on dial-up @ $5.95 per month. Might splurge to see what its like.

Yea, but what about us who re-up our contract after the 12 months to whatever the contract price is then? If the past is any indication to the future, it'll be $9.99 then for 1.5Mbps.

That's fine by me.

Re: Where?

My father is still paying AT&T Worldnet Dial-Up 24.95 per month.... This would be for my father as they could let him keep his current e-mail address.

It is still too much $$$ for too little speed.

I didn't think they'd go lower than $14.99

And they're back to doing a full year of the low price too. $12.99 for 1536/384 beats the pants off of Verizon's $14.99 for 768/128. Way to set the pricing bar, SB, er, AT&T! It'd be really nice to see the cable companies crack on their pricing. Bring that $45.95 Comcast service down to $29.99 at least for god sakes.

Not true. AT&T=SBC=LEC.

silly

why would you buy this? cheap for a year...then stuck with a low speed at a high price later... I'd rather keep paying more for cable with the far higher speeds.
