I am just a bit jealous, or rather a lot. Hope it works out well for them.

1 of 2 things will probably happen over the next couple years.

1.) Utopia will be expanded to cover other areas of Utah.

2.) Your local duopolies will feel the heat and upgrade before #1 happens.

3.) Bush invades Utah because the NSA can't tap into fiber

I am waiting for it

I thought they had put the fiber into (well, about three blocks away) my area this fall, but according to the SL Trib we are not due until later in '06. I wonder if COMCAST and/or Qwest are getting scared and putting in preemptive strike capability?

*Sigh* I am not an economist, but I wonder if the incumbents had spent money on infrastructure instead of lawsuits to stop infrastructure, if I would have had UTOPIA like service by now.

Well at least you have comcast to hold you over. They may be crappy but they most likely have faster speeds than around here.
With a choice of Qwest or Mediacom around your really stuck with two not so great services. Gotta love the speeds 5/256 .
Some day one of them will upgrade something.

Why they are charging $40-45/month. They can easily charge $100 for it and get the same rate of subscribers. 15Mbps symmetrical! How sweet!

Prefer Qwest despite the power issues and the 60% helpdesk idiot rate, and that is because Xmission is a good ISP with a good help desk, even when it is Qwest's fault. And from what people say about Comcast, I think I will stay with the lower DSL speeds (1.5/1 or actual nominal 1.1/0.8).

Hmmm... well, I guess what I wrote up there makes sense, but I do not think I would want to write a report like that .

If I recall, there are bandwidth caps, so the speed to me is rather moot. I'll take my friend's 100mbit synchronous uncapped connection in Stockholm any day, or, in the meantime, uncapped 1.5/896 from Qwest.

34.95 for 8/8 sucks. 39.95 15/15 makes economy sense!!! how about 8/8 for 19.95??? I take that over my SBC 3/.512 at 21.99

Xmission informed me there is a 100 gig a month cap.

Re: $45 - 15/15

Sure, but if you look at what current competition is:
Comcastic 8mbit/768kbit no cabletv with rental = 66
Comcastic 4mbit/384kbit no cabletv with rental = 56
Qwest 1.5mbit/896kbit no phoneline = 43
Qwest upto7mibt/896 no phoneline = 54

Compare to:
ATT/SBC Utopia 8/8 no phone or tv required = 35
ATT/SBC Utopia 15/15 no phone or tv required = 40

Bottom line is the consumer saves money. The wonderful thing about utopia that no one bothers to mention is that even if it totally flops and the taxpayers have to pay for it, they'll still be saving money because comcast and qwest have lowered their price (to utopia served addresses) to 29.99 for their highest speeds (not including modem rentals and phone line costs) but still you get the idea the consumer saves 20-30 bucks a month on their internet bill.
The number i heard that worst case utopia scenario is taxypayers would owe about 9 dollars a month if it flopped.

Every city councilman/mayor who voted it down in their city, should feel like crap for essentially not voting to save EVERYONE in their cities real montly dollars.
