Against TOS for most ISPs and bad idea generally

It is perfectly OK to share your WiFi AP if your provider, like Speakeasy, allows it. But most don't.

Aside from that, is it generally a good idea to share with neighbors? And for that I say no. Two main reasons for that:
1 - it can slow down your connection when you wish it didn't.
2 - your neighbor may be going to sites that are illegal(child porn for an example or P2P uploading) or at the very least embarrassing if the web sites visited by your IP address are subpoenaed for something(divorce, harassment lawsuits, etc.).

They are doing this at their OWN will. They aren't reporting neighbors that have unprotected wifi connections.

Lol! Good luck finding exactly who is sharing. Its impossible to tell from the map exactly where the offender might live.

Both of these problems can be solved with a single solution. The Public IP project. Public IP makes a bootable CD that acts as a network management/network policy enforcement tool. It handles packet shaping which keeps people from consuming all of your bandwidth. More importantly though, it prevents people from sending spam, downloading iso's, mp3's, rar's etc and keeps them from viewing pornography via dansguardian.

I've used this for years at a number of locations (homes and businesses) and never have had a problem with either of the issues you mentioned.

That is a cool setup. But how many people are going to go to the trouble of devoting a separate PC just to provide internet access to neighbors. I think it is a great way to set up a WiFi hotspot if so inclined, but probably not for the people who may take part in this sharemywifi idea just to help out a neighbor.

I'd guess that neither of us know the answer to that for sure. We could speculate, but obviously it'd be just that. Of all the people I know who've done similar projects 100% of them use Public IP. Granted that 100% is just me though =)

When I decided that might be something I wanted to do, I picked up a newspaper and found someone selling an old 333Mhz system for $20. Bought the machine and a cheap PCI NIC for another $10 and it's been running fine since. For the businesses I've setup with the same, for wifi access while you have your coffee etc, they've purchased new barebones systems with 256MB of RAM and only a CDROM drive. Total cost to them has been around $150.

My point was just that there's a solution to the problems you mention.

Sweeet:D I have been looking for exactly this. I have nothing against letting people use my connection for simple web browsing and checking their email, specially when nobody is home all day, but I dont want them spamming or downloading porn DVD's through it...

TOS be dammed, I ran Netstumbler on my way to work the other day and in the five whole miles I go to work I recorded 85 access points 62 of them were wide open, 48 of them had SSID's like "Linksys", Netgear54G, ACTIONTEC, Dlink, and even "Default".

They should deal with thease people first.

Agreed. It's 2006, the Internet has become an important part of our society. There's been plenty of occasions where I wasn't at home but needed some kind of access. In my opinion sharing some percentage of your capacity via some safe method is a great thing. I've had users who were just passing through the area use it, people who's own connection was down and they needed to look something up online, and even some retired folks who were on a fixed/limited income who couldn't afford broadband at all. To all of those people having a connection available to them is likely a great thing. Internet access is quickly approaching the status of community infrastructure and in my opinion everyone is entitled to at least minimal access (http(s)).

Public libraries are great for this.

Apparently so are grass-roots wifi networks.

Curiously, do you have to go to the library to watch TV or listen to the radio? How about at midnight?

Let them get their own connection. I do not pay my hard earned dollars for a broadband connection just so my whole block can enjoy it for free.
