| check out a reply I got from rogers! We apologize for the delay in responding to your email. We are currently receiving higher email volume than normal, and are attempting to answer all email as quickly as possible in the order they arrive.
We understand your concerns regarding issues you are experiencing with your peer-to-peer (P2P) applications. To ensure a consistently high level of service for all Rogers customers, it is necessary to put limits on the amount of network bandwidth available for certain types of applications. This process is called traffic regulation (rate-limiting, traffic shaping, throttling).
As peer-to-peer (P2P) applications have grown in popularity, their share of overall network traffic has increased dramatically. In particular, the application Bittorrent uses all of the space available for uploads. To ensure that a relatively small number of applications do not slow service for everyone, Rogers limits the space available for P2P uploads. This ensures all customers have a high level of service for time-sensitive tasks like sending email, requesting web pages or voice messaging.
Rogers does not block any type of Internet traffic or application. Nor do we monitor the content of customer communications or activities on the Internet. Our traffic regulation is based on the type of application, not the way it is used.
We thank you for your understanding in this matter.

THEY KNOCK ME OFF when using any fileshare client. NEVERMIND JUST Azureus.. I am switching to uTorrent to see if that works..
But Rogers sucked me into another contract by giving me a crazy $ saving plan for 2 years.. I save lots of money.. but if they are just going to FUK me over again.. I'm going to make it my lifes work to destroy Rogers.

| Slower Torrents with Modem Replacement Recently, Rogers in Ontario sent me a letter asking me to replace the modem I was using for their Hi-Speed service. When I exchanged it for the Scientific-Atlanta Webstar DPC2100R2 modem that they gave me, my Torrent upload speed was radically reduced. I'm not yet sure about the overall impact on my download speed. It remains better than the upload. The help desk person I spoke to had no suggestions, and mentioned to me the Rogers P2P throttling policy. | |

@rogers.com | Re: Slower Torrents with Modem Replacement That's because the new modems that they're (Rogers) is making us upgrade to, allow them to throttle our modem specifically.

| Ways around the new blanket throttling???
As soon as I got the letter from rogers telling me about the 'modem upgrade' I knew the bastards were up to something.
The big question is, is there any method currently or perhaps in the near future to get around this new roadblock for p2p sharing on Rogers other than switching to Bell??? I am not really a techy guy so if someone could shed some hope on possibilities it would be great.

| Re: Ways around the new blanket throttling??? I handed my new modem back to the rogers store where I had picked it up and told them why I was cancelling my service. At first he claimed it was "techie paranoia" until I told him Rogers had already admitted to it. He then changed tack and said that torrents are mostly used for illegal activities anyway and they were under pressure from the MPAA. (I download Linux distros via .iso files as torrents, it is often the easiest way to get them) I also mentioned that since they are throttling all encrypted packets, it screws up my VPN and SSH connections to work as well. Anyway, I closed by asking him if the MPAA writes the cheques for my internet service or do I? If I purchase "extreme edition" service with 80G/Month download, then I have purchased the right to 80G per month of bandwidth, so they have no business degrading ANY protocol I chose to use the bandwidth I have paid for. I had been a loyal Rogers cable modem customer since 2000. (They were great in their early days)
My new ISP seems to get this, and they don't screw with the bandwidth I paid for. IMHO Rogers has gotten too big and complacent, and just like Bell about 20 years ago starts taking customers for granted. Also, in Rogers case they are becoming more of a media company and and trying to force you to "rent" your movies via pay per view or Rogers video stores instead of downloading. The real reason for the throttling is their business model.

| Re: Ways around the new blanket throttling??? I fully agree with you. As for the modem upgrade... We're not downgrading our modem... it works fine as is. The day they downgrade our service, we're switching to another provider... not only for the Internet connection but also our cable TV, telephone as well as our mobile phone. Rogers have grown too big and become too arrogant. | |

| Re: Ways around the new blanket throttling??? ***Update: I have noticed a slight improvement in speeds over the past week. ie: from basically dead 0-2KB/s(!) to around 10-20 KB/s with peaks to 50 KB/s late at night over the weekend. Nowhere near the average speeds of before the 'Upgrade' but an improvement.
Perhaps those fat bald millionaire MBA suits at Rogers who know diddley dick about the internet are feeling the heat? After all, how will they explain the mass exodus of revenue from their high speed service to their board of directors come end of 2nd quarter in June?

| Rogers are Theives Basically we are paying Rogers to provide a service,by throttelling the bandwidth they are stealing from us all!I think we should start a petition and try to convince ALL Rogers customers to switch providers. They are basically screwing themselves over. The best way is to start a group on Facebook and notify people of the truth and how to stop them DEAD in their tracks. You get millions of hits on Facebook, more than enough to cripple them.Time to get some payback for our herd earned dollars we dish out to these Bastards! | |
