Its more expensive than that.....

Dont forget to add the cost of the landline also. I have the cheapest package Verizon offers and the phone bill is $45 per month. Add any DSL package and I would be paying almost $70. DSL? FORGET IT, GET CABLE!!!!

Cost per sub or per speed?

People are getting faster speeds. Faster speeds cost more... ergo...

At some point, companies have to make money

Let's not forget that Comcast, Verizon, etc. answer first and foremost ot shareholders. These $14.95 deals are nice, but like most things, prices go up.

With the telco consolidation however this means less competition at the consumer level. Businesses alwasy pay more for telco services, to subsidize the consumer. I suspect things are going to even a little more out so that businesses are not subsidizing as much. Bunlding will be the only way the consumer will save (very little) money IMHO.

maybe if you weren't buying a 'package' try a local exchange plan. usually about 1/8th the price of your 'package'

Actually, as technology progresses, faster speeds become cheaper to provide... ergo...

DSL up, overall costs a wash

I am in the process of switching to a OneLink connection through SpeakEasy from my shared DSL line.
The OneLink line will end up costing me an extra $10/month.

Both are 6.0/768. Actual performance on the current shared line is about 4.8/640. I hope the OneLink line matches or exceeds that.

We have two phone lines/numbers currently through Verizon. The current shared DSL line runs over a second VZ line. Once the OneLink line is up, I will port the second phone number to my VOIP provider (SunRocket). Once in place, I will cancel that second phone line.

The second phone line costs about $25/month - basic package, no LD. SunRocket costs about $15/month. OneLink will cost me $10 more per month.

So overall, my costs will be about the same - but with money going to companies I'm more willing to support....at least for now and until VZ brings fiber in.

Re: Its more expensive than that.....

As with most of the cable versus DSL debates; this must be looked at at the local level - making sweeping claims about which is better/cheaper is narrow.

I live in QWest territory, who offers naked DSL - sure to get the best rate I need a bundle of services with QWest, but the same is true of the cable (charter) in my area.

So the landline cost argument does not apply to me.

save a few bucks

"on average, about $39.18 a month"

Even at $39.18 a month, I'd save $3.74/month,PLUS have triple the upload, with current Verizon deals around here, of my Charter cable.

But, even though I'm less than 6,000ft from the CO/ATM, the best Verizon can for me is 1.5/256 speed. I'll keep my Charter and the 3/256. Which, for me has been very dependable for 5+ years.

and taxes

My 39.95 month cell phone plan actually costs me $51 when all the taxes get added.

Your OneLink actually should be faster than the shared line. Having the dedicated circuit will actually boost your stats to the CO, thus giving you better throughput.

Just a word of advice, do NOT use the Briteport modem from SE (if you are more than 12,000 feet from the CO), use a Westell 6100 (get 'em for cheap on eBay). The Westell work wonders on the S/N margin, however if you are under 12,000 feet from the CO use the Briteport.

That is incorrect. I literally have dial tone ONLY. 10 cents per minute for LOCAL, plus a varying LD rate. The worst part is that I only have this landline as a backup in case the power goes out (or 911 is needed), it has never once even had a call placed on it.

Come on rates expiring; so average price matching costs

As the special introductory below cost rates expire, many users are starting to pay the full price of DSL service. Therefore, the average price is rising to cover the cost of providing the service. You can't get a free ride forever.

Then $45 isn't a bad deal, Comcast charges $60/mo for cable internet without TV.

You pay $45/month just for a dial tone and still have to pay 10 cents per minute for Local calls??? That's just crazy.

Why don't you get VOIP? I have zipglobal and it's 2 cents a minute for anywhere in US/Canada and $3/month. It's gone out like once in the past year.

I knew it wouldn't take long for this to be brought up. Who would have thought so soon though? Anyhow, $44.61 is what I pay for landline and 1.5/384 DSL service monthly. This price could probably be reduced by going with measured service. I understand people in different places pay different prices, but the blanket statement that DSL is more expensive because you have to have a landline is just false. Period.

I cant speak for every market, however there is a strong reason I mention it particular to my situation. Here in NYC, you cant get basic phone service for less than around $40. In this same market however, the difference in price for cable internet with TV versus without is only around $10 (or less). So in my case (and the millions who live around here), there is truly no comparison between cable and DSL.

Trust me I have VoIP! I use Broadvoice as my primary phone and it never runs me more than $20. The landline is just there for emergencies.

I'm hoping so! My first DSL line, I was 5600ft from the CO. Every change since then, the distance has increased. I'm now at 9500ft. So I'm worried that the OneLink distance will be even longer...plus I have to hope for a solid pair of copper for it to work over.

Will see what happens after it's installed. If I'm over 10000ft and/or my S/N is poor, I'll strongly consider that. Thanks! I also have an older Zyxel to try as well should I have S/N problems.
