would sign up

if they can get VOD Directv would defiently be a option. And isn't there a technical limitation to vod with satellite?

i have enough problems just trying to decide among 200 channels,

Telco's already wringing their hands...

...looking at QoS fees they could possibly charge what would amount to a video competitor DirecTV.

How to do VOD

It would be nice if Directv would explain how they are going to do "TRUE" vod service like cable. You should be able to select a program, it would say "one moment please" and start the video from the beginning, allowing pausing, rewind and fast forward services (not a PVR).

Unless they plan on having a pseudo "direcPC" system where the modem would dial up and tell the NOC what you want to watch and then beam it down, I can't see how they can do it. Also, what a pain in the butt to have to dial up each time to do something or have to connect it to a broadband device.

The only other options I see is preloading via a PVR but that isn't true VOD or waiting until their wifi system is up and tying both the two together to create a system like the "direcPC" system where the unit would tell the NOC what they wanted via wireless and then beam it down by sat.

It would be cool if directv could do it, but I think right now cable has the upper hand.

so this means that they will just be offering more channels or will they be offering broadband to?

From the article:

"DirectTV's download service, which will use existing broadband connections..."

Based on other coverage I've seen of this story today, they are planning on downloading the content via whatever IP Broadband connection is in the home. In the short to mid-term (i.e. before DirecTV get their "WiMax" thing up and running) that is going to be either a Cable or DSL connection.

Which means the whole "2-tiered Internet" debate is going to get even hotter in the coming weeks and months

And even MORE letters will be going out from Comcast for bandwidth abuse because people's usage will go up.

Absolutely. We've already seen that the cable companies in particular are uneasy about the increased amount of VOIP traffic on their networks, and this is only because VOIP detracts from voice services that they are trying to promote. DirecTV VOD will not only detract from the cable companies core service (providing video), but could also cause them serious network congestion problems if use gets too widespread. I normally think that the cable companies complain too much, but I think this time they would have valid grounds.

Cable video sucks

I'm a long time DTV and Dishnet user and recently moved to an appt. with no chance for Dish service.
I signed up for Comcast's internet and Video and the quality of video is amazingly weak in comparison to Directv or Dishnetwork.
I have the same HDTV as with satelite and its ridiculously bad via cable. I lost my 120gig Dishnet DVR and got an 80gig Cable HDTV recorder that lacks in size and quality.
As for VOIP I don't really care because my cell phone is all I ever need/use and with unlimited cell usage so cheap why waste time with land lines and voip?

Now on the other hand internet is AMAZING on Comcast's 8.0/768 service and that's one thing they really do well at.
The modems very small and easy to hide as well.

Strange - around here, we're a digital simulcast area and cable easily beats out DirecTV for quality and HDTV options. I had DTV and when we got our HDTV bailed ($400 for a HDtivo + $10/mo, are you insane?). For $5 more than CC Cable + DTV, I get HD, DVR, and Internet....

I think you're getting ripped off then lol
Satellite kills Cable in picture quality and if you need to prove it call your cable provider and ask them directly if their signal is better. They will tell you all about their services and never answer the question because they know the answer. You can get better quality than cable over the air in most areas.

Yes it does. My analog cable is terrible and comcast digital HD at a friends house looked blurrier then my direct-tv.

Blurrier than DirecTV? ROLF... I dunno Comcast HD but knowing DTV's really shitty PQ it certainly sounds like an exaggerated claim...

DirectTV and Dishnetwork kill cable in picture quality. It's not even worth arguing as everyone including comcast openly admit it.

itguy05 was talking about cable on ADS. We are ADS (all digital simulcast) in most of Chicago, and the picture quality is the same as, or better, than satellite. Satellite does, however, beat out most analog cable picture quality.

You can swap your DVR for the dual-tuner 160GB model, sounds like you have the first generation single tuner one.

Every digital Channel on Charter and the HD channels are as clear if not clearer than DTV or Dishnetwork. Sound is no different. Plus when is Rains or Snows I can still watch TV.
