| The solution is sooo simple Just let them install the new.net spyware virus! It redirects all your DNS queries anyway.
But seriously, is anyone even remotely surprised? The chinese can 'invisibly redirect' queries to .com domains much easier. In fact, they can actively shut down port 53 UDP, to prevent anyone from using ANY servers inside their country. That effectively means, you CANNOT run your own DNS server internally in china, and use the correct root hints. The only place china needs to filter will be at the root servers in their country. It can pass through, filter, or outright block recursive queries.
So, google 'world' version is irrelevant. The only thing google china can ever index is stuff that's approved in china (since the google servers in china will be forced to use the chinese dns, it will only find servers the chinese wants it to find).
All in all, a brilliant technical solution to their problem.
Having said that, China has the worst possible solution there is. It's the complete bastardization of what makes the internet work. It's done in the name in control and power, not in the name of technology. It's only purpose is to subvert the masses, and force it's view of the world on all the people it services..
To follow up. Replace the word China with 'Verizon' or 'SBC' or 'Comcast' in the last paragraph. There is no difference between what china is doing, and what verizon wants to do. -- Flabby? pastey-skinned? riddled with phlebitis? Then you've got a good Republican body! So compare your lives to mine, and then kill yourself.

| Let each country have their own DNS That would be the best option. Let have their own set of DNS on national level, ie whatever.com/edu/gov.XX, where XX is a country code.
A lot of nations got pissed off that US simply holds all .com's gov's and all fancy names to itself.
New method would solve lots of problems. But then US won't be happy to give away .us
When you think about it it would work nice. For example google.com in poland would redirect to polish google, but google.com.us would go to US version. Just like dialing international code from your phone.

| Chinese Mind Control-Verizon is Taking a Lesson What is obvious is that the Chinese government wants to control the flow of information to it's citizens. Information is power and look at what has happened to the world in countries that previously practiced mind control. Case in point the Soviet Union is gone. Why because they couldn't control the flow of information. China will implode on itself. The old communist farts will die off, and Hong Kong will certainly not toe the line. Also they are going to have one hell of a time since unfortunately for them the cat is already out of the bag! What I find amazing is that a handful of senile old men can control a country of over 1 billion inhabitants. It must be the fluoride So to, sooner or later the 1 billion Chinese need to step up to the plate and decide for themselves..Mind Control or Freedom. Now I wonder how long it will take a clever hacker to hack into one of those Chinese DNS servers. If only we could engage them to do something useful we might see the amount of spam drop. What a thought.
Fast forward. The Internet as we know it today may be in for a change. Our very own Verizon Mind Police now want to control what information we see. All I want to buy is the pipe. Which in case Verizon doesn't understand, we the tax payers have already paid for several times over, not to mention the monthly offering many drop at Verizon's altar. I don't mind the monthly payments. They can charge what they see fit for various levels of access and I can choose how fast I want to go. If they want to provide TV like cable fine, line up and negotiate with each community, just like Comcast and other cable outfits have done in the past. I would welcome it if the gave Comcast some competition. But VERIZON READ THIS!! I don't want Verizon to control where I go, which search engine I see and what content I read first. Google should not pay anything. Let's see how long Verizon customers hang around without unfettered access to Google, or for that matter any other web site! Verizon wants to control the content and the pipe. My response to them is take your pipe and shove it where the sun does not shine.

| This is interesting
Isn't this interesting?
If all countries follow this then this will help innovation. Till now they are forced to follow what rest of the world follows (read slow development). But, with this new intranet stuff they would be able to do their own thing. This would also help in network security as no more spam or hack attempts from hostile countries. This would also mean more revenue for the restricting countries as they would only allow access to foreign sites that pay the tax. better control and virtually no porn stuff. Very clean and efficient system.

| Welcome to The Real World To all you stupid little dreamers who think we can create a virtual utopia that span national borders and cultures here is your wakeup call. The idea of a seamless world wide net was a myth to the start. If it were not for totalitarianism, it would be nationalism. I see the net fragmenting on nationalist and culturalist lines. If not the Chinese, it would be the Islamic leaders or European bureaucrats. We just better get use to a fragmented Internet, one can not override human nature.
P.S. On justifiable reasons of a Chinese DNS is now the Doman names can use Chinese Characters.
