nah, I'd rather have dsl...
that would make sense they're the only market in the world like that... wish we had more fiber options here. I'll never forget a little flyer mailed out about 5, 6 years ago that said "we're installing fiber, you will have access to it soon" ..little did we expect that it was to be shared, turned into coax, and shared with everyone to the point of overloaded nodes and bandwidth hogs everywhere. |

so not only is the U.S. installing at a much lower rate, the stuff they are installing is already "old technology".
No wonder the U.S. is 16th and falling. |

What else would you expect when you have large corporations involved, politicians & then everybody taking everybody to court on top of that? The whole system is so bogged down with corruption & legislation that many companies say forget dropping billions into a project that will take about 10 years to get up and running. Then you also have huge portions of the American public that have no idea what broadband is and still think the internet is just a fad. Its obvious that the Japanese are a lot smarter then the U.S. when it comes to this. |

BPON is easily upgraded to GPON or GEPON so its really not a big deal. The US does not need those higher speeds produced by GPON or GEPON at this time (BPON speeds theoretically max out at 600 mgbits while GPON is well over a GIG) but when the time is right the upgrades will be swift. To deploy the big guns now would be a waste of resources, progression is the key in buisnesses of all natures. |

Of course! The whole of Japan is about the size of California. They don't have anywheres near the logistic problems or cost of laying fiber throughout a country the size of the USA. A good amount of that land mass is mountains. Their urban population is very densely packed (it's a dense pack! ) The average Japanese dwelling is so tiny that most Americans would never want to voluntarily live with similar space confinement... and with multiple people! It's not uncommon for whole families live in one tiny apartment. Given that density, of course more of their population will have access to fiber. And since when was access to fiber a race between nations? What's the point? Wow, they can download porn faster. Gee.

| Technically doesn't that make it all the more pathetic that they contributed to 80% of the world's growth? (If you're going to play the geography card) How many people in California have fiber-to-the home? The geography argument only floats in penetration arguments, and even then, not very well (Canada leads us, etc.) |

| Well, actually, I guess it's great if you want to live in an apartment the size of a refrigerator in Japan, just as long as you have access to fiber. Right? The grass is not always greener. Those numbers don't tell the whole story. -- Experience one of the most beautiful women on earth at PetraCentral! |

This is typical response from someone who went through a school system run by "teachers union" always reflexively against US and always whining. |

Just a tad bit of difference there density wise vs. land mass... 4:1 ratio |

| Japan is Decades ahead in Technology!
I think Japan is way ahead of us in Technology. Like I have been saying for years, Fiber and Networks are the future. Japan realized this Decades ago, so of course now they are 80% FTTH. Their Digital and Electronic Technology is far superior to ours. I wouldn't be surprised if their home Networks are Gigabit, and Streaming High Definition Video and Music common place. |

Well lets look at this. You have Japan most of whose population is located in dense Urban areas and multi-dwelling buildings. Its really easier to hook these up you put a DSLAM unit in the basement to connect 100's or more people at a time, run an optic link to the local office. Got a building with a lot of people in it? throw a dslam in and run an optic to it. Piece of cake. We Americans generally like our space. We're spread-out. there are a bit more technical limitations to running things out to each home (except in the denser Urban areas in apartment buildings, we could throw dslams in there) |
