Well, this is going to be interesting! I mean, we have been told by them that this is not possible and "WE" weren't interested in such pacakges, right?
I think this would encourage many of those who are just tired of the pricing tactics of SBC/AT&T to be motivated to stick around after our contracts are up IF THE PRICE stays competitive. Now, they go back to their old ways of just increasing and yoyoing DSL prices to compensate for landline overcharges, then we are back to square one.
Sadly, I think that is exatly what is about to happen |

My guess is, don't count on the same pricing scheme. Historically, BUNDLES are where the discounts are at! |

I'd be shocked if the price for "naked dsl" was anything less than 60 bucks per month. |

| Dry Loop in NY
I have Verizon "Dry Loop" DSL here in Upstate NY. The packages are only $5 more a month vs. the regular DSL. The thing that bothers me about this story it that it says they have to offer it for only 2 years. What will happen in year 3? I can hear it now....."If you want to continue with DSL we are going to start charging you for phone service also...." -- »www.Leatherjockey.com |

This is your chance. You REALLY want to sway cable customers like myself? Make it 25/mo with speeds that are competitive and I will switch from Comcast in a second. If they REALLY play this smart, they could wind up with MANY new customers and quite a large profit margin. IF they do the right thing. -- All Things Art »kkart.deviantart.com |

| A federal requirement for SBC's purchase of AT&T was that within one year the new company offer exactly this service. California is pushing a local rule ahead of what will be a federal mandate at least for SBCatt.
But, the feds did not rule on price and dsl is a non-regulated service..... |

....And they jacked me around. My neighbors have had DSL for years ,but I cant get it because of my line quality. Verizon refused to sell me dry loop. With the strong arm of the LAW,maybe things will change. |

| Blame Consumers.
Since they would rather tolerate the abuse than do without telco broadband. People are, for the most part, easily addicted to broadband and cannot live without it. Much like a smoker or habitual drinker, they strongly desire their fixes and are willing to be abused by the providers at hand. Just look at the tobacco and Alcohol taxation--yet consumers still consume them in large quantities.
So, why should broadband users be any different. They could do without, vote their municipalities to bring city-competition, etc., etc., etc., but they will for the majority continue to be abused. I do not see this changing anytime soon. Like all good cows, you can and will continue to 'moo' your way into the slaughterhouse.
And saying you have no alternative when the option of not having anything is an option is better than the hypocrisy of complaining while taking your telco drugs--just like the good little addicts.
Please, sir, may I have some more? |

Folks, Do I really need a landline for satellite if I don't use payView channels/programming?
The vendor I called (DirectTv) 180'd when I said I didn't have a landline (cell only). I was miffed.
Now, I wonder if I give them a Vonage line...how would they know?
TIA... |

unless its a 2way sat you do need the line otherwise there is no outgoing signal for the 2 to communicate. |

The opposing side fired off an EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) to shut down all communications. The only thing that worked was by using a telegraph. |

A dry loop will off you nothing better if your line quality is hosed. You will see absolutely no difference is performance. -- :: my trivial ramblings :: |

Direct TV landline is only needed for order PPV and if you have a DirecTV Tivo unit (ocassionaly needs to call but YMMV).
DirecTVs new DVR (R15) does NOT need a phone connection (not even for setup). |
