Though I'd like to have a physical box sometimes, I'll buy online if its cheaper. I can re-download it as I please and not worry about losing the cd-key or the disc's.
Online game selling will take off after companies like Sony and EA use it more. Valve laid out the pavement to get it off the ground and companies are finally noticing that people will download at midnight if it means not having to wait until the store opens. |

Sounds like they're cutting out the middle-man and selling their products directly to the consumer. Shouldn't prices drop because of this? |

What if, you are away and have a game/system failure but no broadband available. You're screwed!
Valve will never go on this machine(laptop that will run any game), so there is a group of games they will never sell here!
I want the CD/DVD for when/if a connection is not accessable. Also just so I have something to show for my money that can be used as I wish.

What about those of us who live where there is no broadband avaiable at all? If gaming was to move to all downloadable content, those of us without broadband are going to be left out. I have only ever bought one game online, and that was because it was the only way to get it. It took me 2 weeks to download. If everytime I wanted a game I had to download them, I wouldn't being playing anything and would be in a constant state of downloading. |

Alot of the times when i buy PC games i don't have much of a choice. I.E. BF2:EF Booster pack is only available via download. The european version is retail but from what i hear its just a box with a download link. |

It's really kind of neat to be able to go to a friend's computer, download steam, and login with your username and password, and have a fully working install of HL2, CS:S, or your other steam games in an hour or so depending on your connection speed.

Its going to be a long time before its "download only". There will be hybrid "Buy in store or download it".
More companies will probably switch to heavier on the downlaoding in the future because it cuts out the publisher which means you profit more in the end. See: lawsuit against Valve about Steam/HL2. |

I like the idea buy a game download it and also get a CD sent to you as well.Really for me I rather just DL it and Burn it to disc.But this brings up a problem if they use a DRM.If they bloat the stuff up with it(DRM) people will be turned off i know i would be.

game downloads of big games have been around for a long time. Some big name some not so big. Anarchy online has had it for a long time for example for a big(ish)name and for small name rubies of eventide has had downloadable software from the start and infact is the only way to get the client. Downloadable clients are a great way to get your games name out there and known with what realy ammounts to less cost than the boxxed set. Beleive it or not even the big boys out there like blizzard dont make a whle lot off boxxed sales (its more advertisment than any thing else) and you might be shocked if you seen sonys profit margine on boxxed sales. Im sure its pretty high considering they are a self published game company meanign they dont have that over head. But once you factor in material cost electricity (yes you heard right) etc this probably takes about 1 to 2 bucks for all packageing etc. Then of corse sony doesnt sell the software to the retailer at shelf price. So you can asume 50% or less of shelf price is what your local kmart walmart toys r us etc pays for that game. Then advertisement cuts out most of the remaining profit made from boxxed sales.
